noticed I can pick up a new core 2 duo cheaper than upgrading through dell and then I can sell the old core duo so wondered if its the same mobo so that will work smoothly?

Yes you can. Several users have upgraded to C2D from CD with no trouble at all. You might have to update your drivers, so I would recommend doing this before you do the upgrade.

Goto support.dell.com and navigate to the specific model that you have on the drivers & downloads page.

Under the FlashBIOS section, download the .exe file . Then run that file and it will flash the BIOS. Don't interrupt the process though. It should only take a couple of minutes.

My E1505(aka 6400) uses the F08 BIOS and has C2D so anything F08 or newer will work with C2D.
