    hi,
i have an inspiron 1420 (core2duo T7250, 2Ghz, 2Gb DDR2, Geforce 8400GS). Last day the performance of the system was too poor. it showed very low values when i benchmarked it using everest also. Then i restarted it and upon restart it showed a message that the "system couldnt detect the wattage of power adapter and to connect a 65 or 90 watt power adapter (i have the 90 watt one) or system will compensate by reducing performance." i removed the adapter and performance was ok.

however i would like to know how this happened. does dell automatically decrease performance for power adapter issues or is this a safety feature....also everest gives my cpu core voltage fluctuating between 0.96v & 1.5v...is this normal

    thanx in advance

The psu thing is a common weird issue. Sometimes you just need to unplug it and plug it back in (to both the wall and your computer) and it will detect the wattage just fine.

It is not a safety feature.

The core voltage varying is speedstep as it changes the frequency of the processor when it is not being stressed to lower to conserve power, and reduce heat.

thanx nizzy, however the system peformance was damn slow when this issue happened. why is it so. also i see the performance is very low for 1 or 2 seconds when i plug in the adapter or pull it out ....(this happens all the time)
