i'd love to stick in 4gb of ram but the price between 2 and 4 from dell is crazy!
i've never bought a laptop before and am unsure if laptop ram is normally that expensive and if it isn't can i buy ram from somewhere else and install it?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

It would probably be cheaper to chuck the modules that come with the Dell, buy new RAM, and install it. That upgrade is insane. Of course, don't pay to upgrade to 2 GB if you do that.

The thing is, with the way Vostros are priced, it's cheaper to get the upgraded package with 2gb than it is to configure a regular one with just 1 gig of ram.

Their RAM pricing makes no sense at all.

It's a well known fact that Dell-bought RAM makes great ninja stars after you replace it with stuff from newegg.

thanks for the help everyone. good to know.. i think i'm going to drop my extra gig of ram then.

so just to confirm, i can buy any of that laptop ram from newegg (or anywhere else for that matter) because the ram is standard? no special sizes or fittings for the dell inspiron?

is the dell ram special in any way?

is it hard to open the inspiron?

    thanks again!

very easy to replace, 1 slot found underneath the keyboard, just remove hinge cover and unscrew keyboard.
slot 2 is at the bottom of the system. flip it over, loosen the captive screw on compartment M.

now take note of the rams clock speed, anything lower than the supported speed will not work. 1720 inspiron uses 667MHz ram speed

    try this

I ordered this for my 1720. Still upgraded to the 2gig Dell was offering since the price is right. I will sell the Dell Modules once I get these in.
