    It shouldn't. If it does then the most likely problem is a bad fan.

    Actually, Core 2 CPUs are known to make high-pitched noise. I forgot was exactly was the cause, but replacing the motherboard usually helps. I don't know if this issue had been resolved in SR

    Now that you've said it that does ring a bell, but I thought it was just for the headphone noise issue.

    Anyway, it's hard to tell if the OP is getting a mechanical noise or a something from his systems' audio output...

    Mine 6400 with C2D doesn't make any noise, even system fan is practically silent
