to make a long story short i had to reinstall my os . i got vista basic. i installed the media direct and the os... right after that i tried installing my nvidia drivers (from laptop2 video 169.04) because those worked the best for me in the past.
anyway i tried to install them and here is what happens: the driver installation is very quick; it installs half of the drivers in like 1 second. it then waits like 5 minutes at which point my screen flashes black and even stays black for a couple of seconds... then the installation is complete.
I know for a fact that there is something wrong going on here. Ive installed drivers before and this installation was different and strange. I tried installing ati tool..... didnt let me use it saying i dont have an ati card..i was using it just yesterday before the os install... i tried to install ntune.. said my mother board isnt compatible. so what the hell is going on?
until you guys help.. i cant game.. there goes my sunday evening.

i ran 3dmark06... i got the score of 3505. this is probably because this is at stock clocks... but with the 169.04 drivers i should be able to overclock and the ati tool does not let me do that ! before i was getting 4150 b/c i had it oced... now every time i run ati tool i get error message saying "no ati card was detected on your system, most of the functions have been deactivated".
Ati tool .24 -
so no one knows ? kinda hard to solve this if no one responds =/

install the 163.75 driver from laptoptogo via the inf have disk method, i installed them 169 drivers on mine, and it gave me a load of grief and showd my 8600GT as a 6100 , went back to 163.75 and no problems again and its sweet

Make sure you've installed the Intel chipset drivers.
-
well ill try to install the intel chipset drivers .. i know i never did that.. however i did come to the solution of this problem. if anyone else experiences this... here is the solution:
0. Uninstall Current Ati tool
1. Download ati tool .27 b2
2. Press F8 during start up and disable forced driver signing.
3. Install Ati tool
Should work now. -
what/why are you using an ati tool when you have a geforce card ??
-
polsta... its just called ATItool.. its for Both ati and nvidia cards. and other programs like ntune dont even work for me...
in any case... additional problem: i restarted computer and ati tool has stopped working again displpaying an error message about kernell. I restarted, pressed F8 and disabled driver enforcement again and now ati tool works again. thats for anyone who is experiencing similar problems.
Im now getting 4150 on 3dmark06 with 610/465 OC. Very happy.
driver hell ... 8600m gt
