If your Inspiron E1505 comes w/ two 512MB SODIMMs, can you just replace one w/ a 1GB SODIMM and have 1.5GB of system memory? I think the answer is no because you have to put matched size DIMMs into DDR2 slots, but I wanted to confirm...

there is no problem doing that.

Yeah drumfu is correct, you can use unmatched memory sticks and it wont lead to any issues other than dual channel wont work(DDR2/DDR does not matter). Running the system with single channel memory wont hurt your performance too much. You wont even notice it unless the program depends heavily on the memory bandwidth. But more memory is always better and I would put more prority over that than the bandwidth benefit due to dual channel memory.

P.S - Although I cannot confirm but I have heard that newer Intel cipsets do support sual channel memory even with unequal sized memory sticks.

on some chipsets you do need matching sticks to achieve dual channel, or to work period, the intel 945 gm that the e1505 uses does not have this limitation, you will get dual channel support with mismatched pairs, the only thing to consider is that if you pair up 1 stick of 667 with 1 533, they will both run at 533

Thanks for the confirmation. The manual didn't say anything about this besides showing how to install memory :p
