I have the same dvd writer in my vostro 1500.... i might add im experiencing a similar problem myself... if i want to burn something to a cd (even if its just pictures) and i go with the default "live cd" format method then it takes painfully long.... i cant even say how long because i just cancel it since it never finishes. once it said i had 13,000 DAYS remaining until it finished burning 54 photos on a cd..

however if i choose the other option before the cd is burned (so the cd cant be edited after that - 1 shot permanent burn) it finishes everything in a minute or so.

oh yeah and this dvd drive opens up on its own sometimes. Hoped this helped man.

P.S. Try going to the DELL website and downloading the latest fix/drivers for this burner. I did and it upgraded from D200 to D300 whatever the hell that means. maybe it will resolve your issue.

The IDE channel drops into PIO mode after problems reading a disc. There's a quicker fix than given in that link.

    1. In Device Manager go to whichever IDE channel has a Current Transfer Mode of PIO and uninstall that channel.

    2. Go to the top of the list in Device Manager, right click on it and select Detect Hardware Changes.

Windows should then find and reinstall the IDE channel with the correct (UDMA-2) transfer mode. There's no need to reboot.

Also make sure you have the l atest firmware and try to avoid any media which give you read problems.
