    dvd playback is choppy

    i have a e1405 with a sony cd/dvd rw drive and ever since ive had it when ever i play a dvd in media player or cineplayer it is always choppy but when i turn of my computer and use media direct the movie runs so smoothly. is it the cd/dvdrw drive, driver, or grahpics card?

    Not exactly sure what the problem is, but here are some things you can try out.

    1. Check the current transfer mode of secondary IDE channel (Device Mgr > IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers > Secondary IDE channel). Check the current mode, if it is PIO then remove the Secondary IDE channel and refresh, XP will automatically reinstall it, hopefully with DMA enabled. But if it already has DMA then that is not the problem.

    2. Try re-installing VGA drivers and maybe Direct X.

    3. Check if some process has high CPU usage while the movie is playing. Also try disabling virus guard and all the unnecessary background apps.

    do you have this problem on battery or ac power, or both? With the sonic player on my m1210/gf7400 I got choppy playback when the vid card was set to max battery, move it to balanced or higher and it was fine, using power dvd, it works just fine on all settings
