I chat with dell tech on my dvd rw drive that is was to loud so they send me a Assembly,Dvd+/-rw,8X,PHILIPS Sullivan/tobago wich it was the same I had with the loud noise, when loading games, kind of anoying sound, and guess what the new phillips had the same noise so I call dell again and complain so they send me a Assembly,DVD=/-RW,8X,NEC,STB but is says it's by Sony too and I heard a lot of complain about the Sony brand, althoug it is a lot quieter, but is this the Nec everyone says is good or is this the Sony I should stay away from and stay with the louder Phillips, anyone with knowledge.

NEC makes some of the best DVD drives around. Looks like your is a rebranded NEC possibly so I wouldn't worry about it too much. What model does Windows report to you. I could check it out and let you know for sure.

I did extended tests with: Sony (re-badged LiteOn), TSSCorp (Toshiba/Samsung), Philips 8820 (in fact a Quanta drive) and NEC 6650.
NEC is the one that works best for me.

Now that I think of it my Sony drive in my laptop has poor reading capability as it will periodically just choke on a disc for no real reason. The drive spins up real fast and doesn't really finish. Also produces some bad dvds. Maybe I will get dell on chat and speak with them about getting a different drive. NEC is preferable if possible.

Well that's what I was trying to find out, because on the drive it says Sony and Nec but the order it says Assembly,DVD=/-RW,8X,NEC,STB so I was trying to find out if this is a Sony or Nec and its made by Optiarc?

The current 'NEC' drives are Optiarc, which is a joint collaboration between NEC & Sony...

This one is an OEM LiteOn SOSW-8?3S.
The one I had was very noisy and having poor error correction capability.
During tests and benchmarks the drive was just freezing.

I got in touch with Dell and told them about it. Had to talk them into sending me a new drive but this time they sent me a Phillips. I don't think I will be going through that again so I am just going to go to newegg.com and getting a NEC ND-5540A.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152073

Although dell may have the ND6650A in their accessories section. If the price is right then I might get it that way but only after trying them one more time.

The thing being should I go through the trouble of asking them to send me a NEC this time since I failed to really specify last time?
