You probably hear it from the sides because of the subwoofer on the bottom. About 60% of the sound comes from the subwoofer. When you turn it off, the main speakers are terrible. They are unable to produce ANY mids and lows. The subwoofer has to take care of both of those.

    And yeah... only 2 speakers.

i have an e1505 and when configuring the dell multimedia thing to play a dvd i chose the option for 4 speakers...that probably doesn't help much, but i don't really know.

Don't cross post - no reason to create two threads. Thanks.

mmm... the sub is enabled by default. In fact, I'm not sure how you can disable it.

There is a slider/mute button for it in volume control.

You might have to turn it on under Options -> Properties.

Also, I thought there were four speakers as well, but I just looked at the service manual and there are only two. So those two vents on the sides of the top of the keyboard must just be for heat then?

    Yeah it was disabled.

And yes, the vents are for fan/heat. I have the same vents on my Latitude D810.
