I've read that e-sata may or may not be powered depending on how the host is designed, does dell's e-sata/usb combo port self-power external 2.5" e-sata drives or do they need their adapters/usb cable used?

Power over eSata isn't an official specification yet. As of now, the eSata bus does not provide power for anything. In theory, the Dell combo ports should be able to push power over an eSata connection due to the power leads of the USB component, but it would need a special cable and a special disk enclosure, which I do not believe anyone makes.

Even if such a cable/enclosure existed, it still may not conform to the final power over eSata spec (if it's ever finalized), and you may not be able to use it with standard power over eSata devices.

    Short answer: no.

USB 3.0 devices are supposed to be available as soon as next year, and SATA 6Gb/s perhaps around the same time? I know P55 desktop motherboard makers were supposed to start putting SATA 6Gb/s controllers on their boards (to be available really soon), but something got delayed and it ain't happening just yet...

I would expect the USB 3 standard to make it's way to notebook territory pretty quickly following commercial release, but I'd be suprised if we see SATA 6Gb/s being adopted so early. Many new notebooks still ship with SATA 150.

Only asus and evga had sata spec listed and they were both sata 3Gbps :(

Notebooks with sata 1.5Gbps is just blasphemy, those makers shd be tarred and feathered for attempting to fool average joe and making him buy yet another model when 2Gbps ssds are cheap next year.
