    Hi,

    I was about to order a 640m for 630gbp.

    - full screen pack 1440x900
    - duo core t2050 1.66ghz
    - 1 gig ram
    - 80gig hd

However i'm concerned over comments that the lcd isn;t good. I decided on the highest spec lcd i could get on this model thinking that it'd be ok. Is it really that bad ?

next.. 9 cell battery is included in that price (was a 12gbp option). I didn't know till now that it protrudes. Is it really that good an upgrade (from 6cell to 9 cell) and is the protrusion bad. I wanted this machine because if it's footprint. But then again by the time you tilt the lcd back it'll cover the battery protrusion.

So i'm mainly concerned about the lcd.I don't game, but may watch dvds but i do take a lot of photographs. I'm not expecting to be able to do fine editing on any make of laptop but for checking sharpness and colour quality will it be good enough.

    cheers,

ps: i'm hoping to order in about 7 hrs time if i'm comfortable with the above 2 issues.

The LCD is okay... it really depends on your luck, expectations & preferences. Don't go with the most expensive option, thinking you'll avoid a "bad" LCD. When deciding on the LCD for this particular model you need to base your decision on two things: Truelife vs. Antiglare & WXGA vs. WXGA+

Um... that is correct, if you're looking at the laptop head on, you obviously won't see the battery sticking out of the back. If that's all that you're concerned about, by all means go with the 9-Cell. Other people are more concerned with the length and weight added by the 9-Cell battery. You can see pictures here. As you can see, even though you can't see the battery sticking out when the screen is up, the vertical dimension of your notebook is still increased by about 1".

Mathematically speaking, the 9 Cell battery should you 50% more run time/power. If you're planning to go w/ the 9 Cell, I'd recommend that you get it as an ADDITIONAL battery, keeping your primary battery a 6 Cell. On Dell's USA site, it's only $30 more. It would give you the option of using a 6-Cell when you want portability, and a 9-Cell when you want more power.

I personally purchased my E1405 w/ a 6 Cell battery. If I ever need a 9 Cell, I will just purchase one on eBay for about $60 (USD).

    thanks for the reply.

i think i'll stick with the 6 cell for now as i'll not be playing games/dvds etc on the road and really i'll be using it in brief 10-20min sessions.

also if it's pot luck with the displlay then i'll need to risk it.

I want the higher resolution so need to get the trulife, unltrsharp (which shold be better for viewing pixel edges ).

thanks, saved me another 12 quid ;)

    cheers

first of all, HI :) newbie here
second,i just placed an order on a 640m last week.it is in production right now.before i drop the hammer,i did some research and from what i understand 2 quotes above are not match with what i know.
-on Dell site, you can get an additional 9 cell battery for $110 more. not $30
-on Ebay you can only get 80whr 9 cell which it works on previous models.
the one for inspiron e1405/640m are 85whr 9 cell which it not even out yet.
maybe it's also works on e1404/640m? or maybe there's an additional discount for $30 battery upgrade? please correct me if i'm wrong,i'm too new at this

right now, the 9 cell battery on Dell is 64 bucks. I don't know what that accomplishes though, but thought I would post it. :)

Welcome to our forums, Tinman. If there is anything that i can help you out with, let me know.

When I made that post, it was $99 to upgade the primary battery to a 9 cell, & $129 to get a 9 cell IN ADDITION to the primary 6 cell battery. I was telling OP that if he was planning to upgrade his primary battery, that it would make more sense just to go w/ an additional battery, since the difference is only $30.

The auctions on eBay always vary. I've seen the 85whr 9 cell batteries; although the 80whr 9 cells are more readily available. Apparently, the 80whr 9 Cell's also work with the E1405... & I doubt the 5whr difference is significant.

I bought the 6 cell and the 9 cell. The 6 cell is flush, and the 9 cell does protrude a bit, but not badly. I can get around 5 hours of regular use (wireless, browsing, excel, etc.) on the 6 cell, and over 8-9 on the 9 cell.

The LCD isn't bad as people say, and if you don't centrate on the issues you'll never notice it. When watching a DVD if it is letterboxed (black bars at top and bottom) you MAY notice light leakage some, but I honestly don't anymore.

BTW- I got the AOU screen everyone complains about, but I don't have sparkles and my light leage is acceptable.

I thought, everyone complains about Samsung (I do). I would take AUO-Quanta over Samsung any day...

@sav -- Except in the 1405, seems tons have complained about the AOU as well. However, like I said, I have none. :D
