I recently received my e1405. I'm not a laptop expert by any means, but have used ibm T series for the previous 5 years through work. I recently bought the e1405 and upgraded the screen to ultralife. The glare is very difficult getting used to. I guess I've always had matte screens. It is almost unusable outside. However, it seems like all laptops these days have these screens - at least in stores. When I try to use it outside, it's almost like a mirror.

Dell only offers the matte version in a lower resolution, why? Does the resolution matter that much? I really like the screen size, etc, but dont know if I can handle the glare. As a test, i reduced the resolution to the same setting as the matte version, and everything got too big. It is a business laptop, and dock it when Im at home. I use it for internet, email, and ms office.

I need to make a decision before my return period runs out.

I completely agree. I just got my E1405 today and am blown away by the glare. It's hard to see stuff on it if there's any light in the room.

People must like it though, because it seems like all manufacturers are using it now. I just dont understand. Maybe you get used to the glare? I was blown away as well. I felt like I was looking in a mirror. Take it outside and try it, its even worse. I was not even in direct sunlight at all... far from it.

ha yeah the window in my room on a cloudy day with the blinds half closed make it glare. i just turn it at a different angle, either the whole computer or adjust the screen, and it makes it better. let's wait and see if anybody has the matte and what they say because i'm thinking on the same lines as you.

i was thinking about it more....the screen is really nice in my opinion, other than the glare. i guess i'll just have to get used to the glare and accept that in a glossy screen. the glossy screen is probably much better than the matte for watching movies and for screen quality, it just seems nicer. and plus it's a pain in the ass to have to return the computer and what not just because i don't like the screen.

I agree with you about the rest of the screen. It is really nice, and you simply cannot find another 14 inch widescreen with these specs for this price, without the glossy screen. I really really do not want to have to return it.

i'm pretty sure they sell covers or something that you can stick on top of your screen to reduce the glare. i'll look into that and let you know.

Well rickdawg what dell sell may fit the E1405 Screen. The dimensions of the plastic screen is 11.25"W and 8.5"H . The notebook's dimensions are 13"W and 9.56"W. But lets not forget that there is a lot of plastics on the both sides of the LCD so I guess the plastic screen may fit. And compared to the other one posted by rickt, this one is only $10.

The text of that link says it fits 14.1" screens. The e1405's screen is 14.1", so I would say it is a safe bet.

Well there are 14.1" notebooks which are not widescreen, right?

I measured my screen...7.5" H X 12" W That might not be exact measurements, but I'm pretty sure that can tell us the plastic screen is meant for non widescreen.

I just received my new 1405 by courier, and there is a problem with teh screen; not size, but white light leakage at the bottom of the screen. I phoned Dell and demanded a new one. Not sure whether it was a problem arising from transit or a build issue. Anyone else have the same problem?

Most everyone is having some sort of light leakage issues. Some are more severe than others. Or maybe they are all the same, but people have different tolerances for it.

phronos from what I read in other threads ALL the e1405 screens have light leakage, which means that the replacement you will get will probably have it too. If I were you and if it wasn't too bad, I would keep it, than getting a new one that might have even worse leakage. I still can't understand why dell keep sending sh***y screens for the e1405 after the numerous customer complains and returns.
