Hey folks. I am thinking the buy a light weight laptop coz I travel frequently.

I check with dell and found out only two choices I have, Inspiron E1405 and XPS M1210. And now there's a $200 discount on e1405. Of course e1405 is cheaper but I heard that XPS is a lot better.

Has anyone used or is using either e1405 or m1210? Please give me some comment. And also I am really curious what makes m1210 so expensive? By this price I can actually get a thinkpad t61.

The M1210 is part of Dell's premium XPS series, which has much higher quality than regular Inspirons. Hence the higher price tag.

    • Better build quality (Magnesium alloy frame)
    • Smaller size/weight (12.1 notebooks are more expensive with any brand)
    • More features (Dedicated graphics option / Integrated camera+mic / Mobile broadband)
    • Better support (XPS series supposedly has better customer support than inspirons)

I would say go with M1210 as well, it is ultraportable with 12.1 wide-screen display. and i have had the pleasure viewing one recently, only thing i don't like is the small touch pad and mouse button. if you want something that is light and compact, but still want to play some DVD then go with M1210.

I think the Dell Latitude D630 is worth looking at.

XPS Support is a lot more professional. More helpful since they what they're doing. Less BS time.
Inspirion Support the rep treats you like a child. Won't listen to your opinion and makes you run non-sense diagnostic.

Thanks. One more dumb question. It seems to me M1210 is a little thick. are all the 12.1'' notebooks supposed to be thicker than usual?

Its not as thick as it looks in pictures. Pictures can be very deceiving. The only thinner laptops that are 12.1 inches do not have an optical drive like the M1210 or discrete graphics. Trust me, the M1210 is the best ultraportable out there.

When I purchased the Inspiron line laptops I became tired with their design and build quality quickly. I was tired of hearing the cheap plastic creak everytime I picked it up. With the m1210 I never get bored taking it out and looking at it. The looks still amaze me and the build quality has always impressed me. I've looked at other ultraportables as well and found none to be as captivating as the m1210.

You should wait till the end of the month. A newer, slimmer, better featured XPS M1210 may be out then.

Haha I guess I am in love! The heat isn't that bad. With office applications and web browsing all day my temperature stays in the 55 degree C range. Ive never had an issue with it being too hot on my lap or shutting down. I usually have it on for a week straight before shutting it down for a night and all throughout the week the temperature is consistent. Make sure you reformat once you get it thought!

    Best wishes

In other non-CPU news, the M1210 update will have a 8400M DX10 graphics card, LED backlighting, slot-loading DVD drive, and be 4 pounds and smaller/thinner than the previous M1210. The tipster got his or her hands on it recently and says it's great, but it's going to be very pricey. – Jason Chen

I am guessing it is going to start at at least 2K for one with a dedicated GPU

I too am considering an M1210, but it will be fairly basic -- no discrete graphic card, etc. In my case, do you think it's worth waiting for the update to come out? In other words, is it likely that some improved features will trickle down to the base configuration without raising the price?

there's rumor saying m1210 will get Santa Rosa at the end of June... I think we should wait a little. If you actually don't need a laptop now.
