First off, it's called the Inspiron 1501 (without the "e"), and there is a good reason for that as explained by abaxter in the review he did just recently.

Comparing both in absolute costs terms, the 1501 can be had for cheaper than the E1505/6400. However, once you factor in the specifications, you'll find that the 1501 is not as good a deal as one would think.

The Intel Core Duo and Core 2 Duo right now will simply outrun ANY AMD mobile processor offerings. Clock for clock, the older Core Duo will perform the same/slightly better than Turion X2, while the Core 2 Duo will simply smoke it.

Also, take in mind that the 1501 lacks any dedicated graphics options, lacks the media buttons on the front, lacks FireWire, S-Video output, lacks MemoryStick/PRO card reading abilities...

I would suggest only looking at the 1501 if you want the absolute cheapest machine configured with the Sempron processor. However, if you are looking at a good entertainment system with a dual core processor, stop thinking about the 1501 and go for the E1505/6400.

the integrated video on the 501 is vastly superior to the gma950, if I was to buy a cheap no frills workhorse computer, I'd take the 501 any day, I hope they offer a 1401 soon, it would be a great competitor to the 1405 which has no integrated video solution,gma950 only

I would take the e1505/6400. Get the lower end x1300 option. If you go with integrated graphics then you will never be able to upgrade it later on. The integrated one uses a completely different motherboard than the dedicated card options. Also like what has been said earlier. The Core Duo chips will smoke an AMD Sempron clock for clock.

EDIT: Whoops! put the wrong system in my info. Went back and checked the card options.

Starting from a base an x1300 can be had for a $49 increase and an x1400 can be added for $99 just to keep you informed.

the 6400 is easily better than the e1501 imo,

i'd pay the extra for the x1400 gfx card :)

There's a few articles on it but this one sums it up from Tomshardware:

    Core 2 Duo smokes AMD's Athlon 64 X2
