    Hello everyone,

    Im running...

    dell inspiron e1505 laptop
win xp pro sp3 Dell BIOS A15
    Core2 cpu t5500 @ 1.66ghz
    1g DDR PC2-5200 ram
    nvidia gforce go 7300 256mb

I really want to put 4gb of ram in this thing, but i learned through reading other posts on this forum that my BIOS limits it to 2gb. has anyone tried to put 4gb in an e1505 successfully?? I dont want to buy 4gb and have it not work, but i really want to upgrade to as much ram as possible.

It's not true. My E1505 takes 2x2GB DDR2 SODIMM. Mine runs 32-bit vista and computer reports Memory (RAM) as 4.00GB under computer/properties.

really! what bios do you have? i wonder if having the different OS makes a difference? also, should i be getting pc-5300?

im not sure if properties tells you whether or not the computer is actually using that ram or not though. how do you find out how much ram your computer is allocating?

    sean nj,
please post an image of the memory and SPD page from cpu-z.
I have tried my 4Gb OCZ kit, 4Gb Crucial kit, and my 4Gb corsair PC5300 memory kit, and none of them will work in my E1505.

Also, please tell us what Bios you have.
The bios version appears at startup, and is shown underneath the Dell Logo which comes up, on boot.

Have you simply made sure that you are running the latest BIOS by going to Dell's support site. If not, then update it as that is most likely your limitation.

Mine has the latest Bios, A15.

The memory I used is Patriot 4GB PC2-5300 667MHz CL4 SODIMM Kit (PSD24G667SK) bought from Newegg. My E1505 is already packed and heading back to Dell as I just got a replacement Studio 1537 (refurbished).

I do not think it has much to do with the Bios. I replaced my E1505's original 2x1GB SAMSUNG RAM with 2x2GB Patriot RAM right after I bought my E1505 exactly 2 years ago. I have no problem except that initially the 32-bit Vista can only see ~3.5GB RAM under my computer/properties. After Vista SP1, my computer reports 4GB RAM.

Have you tried any 2x2GB with your E1505 yet? The maxium SODIMM module that E1505 can recognize is 2GB, so the maxium amount of RAM you can put in is 2x2GB = 4GB. E1505 does not recognize single 4GB SODIMM module.

Sorry i could not get any screen shot of CPU-Z/SPD... now. I already took my defective E1505 down and put the original 100GB hard drive back into it with no OS. It's heading back to Dell.

I have an Inspiron E1405 and just bought the 2GB ram chip today. Can I beef it up to 4gb? Dell sold me the 2gb in just one chip=Ithot it was a 2 piece kit but they said they made it one piece for our convenience. What do you guys think? Can the e1405 handle 4gb ram?thanks

I also have an Inspiron E1505 with A17. Installed 4GB RAM from my XPS M1330 and it works fine. The BIOS only shows 3.25GB but Windows Server 2008 x64 shows the full 4GB. Although I am sure it will only actually use 3.25GB (Physical Memory in the Task Manager shows 3325).

E1505 will not use 4 gigs of ram.. you can install it and windows will report it but dell locked the e1505 A17 and below bios to only allow the system to allocate 3.25 gigs of ram maximum.. even in 64 bit environment you will be limited to 3.25 gigs of ram.. this is due to bios locks and not versions of the operating system.. if you open the bios setup you will see Total memory = 4.0 gigs
System allocated (or system total cant remember what it is called) = 3.25
once again 3.25 is the only maximum amount of memory the laptop can use

Memory upgrading seems to be hit and miss with the E1505
Some people get 3Gb of memory to be recognized, others 3.25Gb, and for some reason mine only shows 2.0Gb when 4Gb is installed.
My bios reads 4Gb, but when in Windows XP Professional X32 SP2 cpu-z and windows both see 2Gb. :(

You guys have this all wrong.

Dell isn't locking memory. If you are using a 32bit version of windows XP and/or Vista the maximum amount of memory you will ever see is roughly 3.25 with 4 gigs installed. Reason it varies is because the more components you have the more memory is taking up by those components. 32-bit OS have a memory limitation of 4 gigs.
