    Hello,

So I have an old inspiron e1505 with windows xp on it and I'm trying to figure out a low cost way to upgrade to windows 10. I know the machine can run windows 7 so specs aren't an issue. As you know there's no direct upgrade path (free anyway) from XP to Windows 10.

I know that with a valid windows 7 installation you are eligible to upgrade to windows 10 for free. I was thinking, if I buy a Dell OEM Windows 7 re-installation disc off of ebay, would it install on my e1505 without entering a product key? If I remember correctly, the old OEM Dell discs just check for a valid Dell BIOS before proceeding.

If this works, I was thinking I could then upgrade to windows 10. Just a little experiment I'm thinking of doing.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

No it wouldn't. Windows 7 must be activated b4 windows 10 will install. I installed win 10 on a e1705 and forgot to activate it after installing, so win 10 wouldn't send me the update till after win7 was activated.
I bought win7 on ebay a few weeks ago oem with product key for $50. Those Dell oem disc are no good without a product key.
