I've owned several dell laptops, including the 8600, 9100 and am currently using the 9300.

A friend of mine is stumped on this one though. His son's computer is a e1505.

When the computer is turned on, everything appears normal. The dell logo appears and windows begins to load. Right before the desktop is supposed to appear, the lcd goes dark. The bulb is fully functional until the desktop appears though.

I think it's a software issue and reinstalling windows will provide the easiest fix. 'Experts' that they have talked to disagree with me, claiming the lcd is probably shot.

    any thoughts?

    thanks

No, this happens to me too on this computer. I don't what the problem is. This is a ViewSonic VG2021m and I think it's from Windows.

If it works fine starting up then it's probably a windows problem.

sounds like a windows problem to me,
what graphics card is in the laptop?

Possible somone has fiddled with the settings on the cards drivers, hence once their loaded as windows is loading the screen darkens.

Something like the contrast and brightness, which could have been saved within the os/driver itself.

The wierd part is that is can be hooked up to external montior and windows will run fine.

ahh well that puts paid to my theory dude,

have you tried closing then opening the screen again, Make sure its set in the os "to do nothing" when you close the lid.

When you close the lid it will turn the display off, re-opening will turn it all back on again in theory.

I don't mean the screen goes black for a moment, it simply stays dark. You'd think the backlight is dead, but it works fine during bootup until the desktop is supposed to appear. Then, you can only see the screen if you tilt the monitor back.

Oh you mean the Brightness of the screen goes down when it goes to the desktop?

Sounds to me like you've got your graphics card only sending signals to your secondary display after boot, even when one's not plugged in.

Right click the desktop/properties/settings and find out what's configured in there. You might find that unticking 'use this device as the primary display' for the second screen will fix the problem if I'm understanding you correctly.

    very cool!

    just to confirm...

the lcd is still displaying a picture, the backlight is simply not functioning while you're in windows.
