Well, after reading a bunch of the threads on here I have decided that the E1705 is probably the notebook to best suit my college/gaming needs. Basically, its going to be stationary in my dorm. I need to customize one to fit my needs with a budget of 1500USD. The only game that I currently play is ffxi, though I may switch over to other MMOs in the distant future. I need this thing to last at least 4 years. So, does anyone have any ideas? I'm more or less open to any opinions as I know little of which specs would give me the most bang for my buck.
So, please, sticking to a $1500 budget, how would you best customize a E1705 to best fit the above stated needs.
Any input is apprectaited^^

Click on the "Dell Coupons" tab at the top of the screen here to get some coupons. I'm fairly sure you can at least get the X1400 card or even the nVidia Go 7900 after applying a $750 off coupon for a config that's $2,000+. Get 1GB of RAM and either a 5400 RPM or 7200RPM hard drive and you'll be golden.

I know alot about computers but likely won't be able to help you since i have no idea what a ffxi or MMOs is. Is that like an HMO medical insurance plan?
Then I realized, my own stupidity on what your talking about wouldn't matter anyhow. Your question said it all, you want to buy a computer today that will play all the games that come out 4 years from now.
Thats called a pipe dream.
Not sure why they call it a "pipe dream" to me a pipe is measured by the bandwidth your getting down your connection, to most I guess a pipe in that reference has something to do instead with crack whores on the Vegas strip? Why you'd want to dream about those I have no idea, live there and can tell you, nothing worth writting home about, instead you'd likely want to stay out of those parts of town.
Give up the dream of every being able to buy even the best computer today thats going to run games 4 years, 2 years or in most cases even 1 year from now. If you want a computer capable of running games that get released 4 years from now, then wait 5 years from now before buying it. -
remember even after you configure it all and get your final price, call up sales a few times and ask them for free shipping and handling if its not already included. and ask for another $100 on top of your deal. the first salesperson might not give it to you but eventually one will.
i dont know alot about comps but i do play quite alot of games. youll need 7800 or 7900 graphics. 1-2 gigs ram seems to help games run smoother but big difference is in load times. hard drive speed helps load times too but not as important for MMOs. if you make a good deal.. you can get it to your door for your $1500. well thats my opinion anyway based on my limited knowledge. =) -
um right at this moment the e1705 is the best deal its been.
some of you may think that just a few weeks ago it was 850 off 2000 that was better.
but the component costs are all much lower now.
I just built one with wuxga 1gb 100 gb hd 7900 go intel pro wireless dvd burner for 1264 shipped
hit those same options take 750 off
the more you add from there the worse deal it gets.
of all the machines you can buy, that would be the one most likely to functionally run a game coming out in 4 years, and be cost effective.
you could spend twice as much, and although the gpu would be faster, it wouldnt be any more compatible with games in 4 years.
so in answer to your basic question the machine you are thinking of purchasing is indeed the most technology time you can get for your dollar.
