First off, Dell puts some much juckware and crap on their computers it kills whatever performance they should have out of the box.

Second, the sound on this is mediocre in my opinion. I've always had desktops and this is my first notebook, but I was expecting a little more..highs are too tinny and lows are too distorted.
Which brings me to the next point..the volume is weird on this thing. It is either way too high or way too low. Barely turning up the volume seems to make it go up alot..and then they bug out and can't handle the load. This happens during music, avi's and other media files.

Thirdly, every now and then I hear something that sounds like a ping, or a marble that rolled inside the notebook and bumps against the side a few times (that's the best way to describe the sound effect). What exacly is that and should it be a cause for concern? I am making in investment in this notebook, and don't want to learn I have a lemon further down the road.

    1. most (non-"business") notebooks come with bloatware; hp, dell, whatever. you sound like you have computer experience; don't you usually reformat/reinstall your OS when you get a new box anyway?

    2. no notebooks have good sound. there are many volume controls that affect the sound. the master volume control, the volume of the app you're using, the 'wave' volume. you need to get them all set correctly to get good sound and smooth increases/decreases.

    3. if there is something loose inside your computer, i'd get it fixed.

Sound and quality don't go hand-in-hand when it comes to laptops. One should argue that being a gaming rig, the XPS series should have better than average soundcards. Alas, they don't so to fix this, an external solution will be the solution for you.
