    Hi ppl,

Im new here and this is my first post. Am an ardent follower of the forum but signed up now only..

Anyhow gettin to the topic on hand, I was planning on gettin a laptop primarily for gaming/work with a budget of 1800$.

Finally narrowed it down to the e1705 with a 7900GS as the best gaming laptop for my moneys worth and which fits in my budget. Correct me if i am wrong there..

Well, while deciding on the screen i was stumped on the WUXGA or WXGA option.. I like a lot of desktop space so was planning on goin with the WUXGA when I read up some posts on it being very small and hard on the eyes..

Would any WUXGA users please give me their opinion here on this? Also, can somebody with a WUXGA screen post a screenshot of their desktop as I think that can give me an idea of how small the font sizes are..

    Thanks in advance.

What will you be doing with your laptop?
Maybe filling out an FAQ would help everyone with that.

As far as the resolution goes, its tough to answer that question. Resolution is a very personal choice, and what may be right for me, could be horribly wrong for you. I would take a trip to your local computer store and compare some resolutions side by side. Don't worry about text size, it can always be increased via Windows controls without worry about stretching. Do keep in mind though, that the 7900GS will become outdated much faster trying to play games at WUXGA vs. trying to play them at WXGA. So you may have to play non native much sooner with the WUXGA, which may be fine for you, but not fine for someone else, again its very subjective.

Would be gaming primarily.. Have filled out the FAQ like you asked.

Hmm, So u say that text size is not a problem here as it can be adjusted.. So thats good news..

Is non native resolution gaming on the dell screens very blurred or is it something that you can adjust too??

Sorry, havent seen any WUXGA screen laptops in the shops i went.. And another thing is a little short of time since the 25% off on inspiron laptops is till April 4th only.. :(

Thanks for helping me out..

Most games will scale very well to nonnative resolutions.

Normal tasks will be blurry if you are running at non-native resolution.

    This is WUXGA: http://www.tu-chemnitz.de/tu/cm/CMJ05/RICHTER/original/C-AD276_33-cr.jpg

    This is WXGA+:

I know it's not a desktop, but hopefully it will give you a feeling of how big the screen is. Just imagine that many pixels crammed into a 17" space.

Hopefully some of our members will chime in with screen shots!

I would REALLY recommend you take a look at WUXGA, WXGA+ seems real big to me, but again as Blake said, it's all personal preference.

Thanks a lot! I was hoping more of a desktop screenshot as it would show icon and font sizes..

Would the movies (DVDs) be different when played on a WUXGA? Also, would gaming on resolutions like 1024 be possible on a WUXGA screen?

You might try visiting the Dell Kiosk at the mall if you have one within reasonable distance and checking out the E1705 and XPS1710 there. One of the two will probably have the serious WUXGA screen as usually the display models at Dell Kiosks have high resolution screens. It is worth a try to check that screen out in person.

I have a D820 with a WUXGA and I love it. The extra screen real estate is worth it imho. The text is smaller of course but it doesn't bother me, and I wear contacts.

Ok , would try out your advice and check out a Dell Direct store..

Btw, how is gaming on WUXGA? Obviously, there are very few cards that can play the current games at a resolution of 1920X1200 so are other resolutions fine on a WUXGA?

As I mentioned earlier, you can game at a non-native resolution.

Most DVDs play at a set resolution independent of the screen.

And the D820 is only 15.4"!!

Agreed, though, I couldn't cope with less resolution...

WXGA on a 17"? Terrible, and a waste of screen real estate.
