    Hey guys,

Just wondering does the e1705 have a s/pdif audio in and out connections.

    Cheers

No S/PDIF input. Output only with a combination svideo breakout box (see thread below). You can always use your choice of USB sound device (the PCMCIA Audigy NX will NOT work).

    Hey Tommy

Good luck getting it to work. I posted a thread here back in Jan and at that time, it was still to new for anyone to comment on. I spent 3 weeks working with Dell. The Manual (starting on page 60) tells you everything you need to know. The dell reps in sales, management, parts, etc couldn't hard find the part. They sent me the wrong cables 2 times before getting it right.

I finally got the right cable and found there is a flaw in the design/implimentation of this in the E series. The Driver indicates it supports this, the dell manaul indicates it supports this, but the SPDIF just doesn't work. The S-video does work.

Using the headphone jack only allows for stereo output and will not send SPDIF out it either.

You are stuck unless you want a USB option at this point in time. If you do get it working, let me know. I'd like to use this without having to add a card myself.

    Best of luck

Now that's one of the silliest solutions I've ever heard:

    You: My sound doesn't work
    Dell: Plug in the video
You: NO, my SOUND doesn't work
    Dell: Plug in the video

    :) :) :)

Hope it works for everyone (I can't test it...)

Yep, definitely a stupid solution. I never would've thought to connect video cables just to get the audio output. I guess Dell expects everything to be hooked up since the s-video port is being used.

Garbuckle, I got a nice laugh when I read your "conversation." :)

thanks for that link. There is mention of installing some other items which i will try as well.

I can say for 100% that i have not been able to get the SPDIF audio to work even using the s-video or composite. Dell even sent me another laptop. I had BOTH of them here, with 2 dongels. Both dongels worked on a Latitude D810, but nothing worked on the E1705.

If anyone does find a workaround, keep those of us who would love getting this to work updated :)

This may be a long shot, but have you upgraded your bios? The current release is A01. There's no mention of spdif in the changelog, but you never know.
