So, I really like the E1705 because of the NVIDIA 7900GS graphics and the $750 off coupon. I need to take the laptop to Universtiy every day, and I was wondering if it was that portable and if I could carry it without much problem. I assk because it seems as though 9lbs is not that much more than a thin and light which is close to 6lbs with the AC adapter.

Ok, just a question: do you reccomend the laptop backpack that Dell sells as an accessory? Its only $39, and I am buying with the $750 coupon so its a very nice deal.

they look like nice bags! Would it be too much trouble to wear a regular backpack, and then carry the crumpler 17 inch bags?

if it was me, i would want something big enough to carry only one bag..for example, i have a crumpler backpack that holds a 17 inch laptop, digital slr and three lenses...invest the money and save your shoulder....

bro..e1705 is way too big to carry around each day. i had bought one for college, but i returned that big beast a week later. it is just not logical to carry a 17 incher each day. they were not made for that. instead, i will probably be buying a macbook pro or asus w3J. i recommend you do the same.

i bought an e1705 with a 7800 a while ago i carry it around quite a bit. I use a targus backpack and its quite good since i can fit some extra stuff in my bag including the laptop.

I don't really mind carrying it around
It is a bit heavy but not a big deal since the screen is easy on the eyes during usage

AbN610: Well, if I had that kind of budget, I wouoldnt be looking at the Dell anyways, I probably would have bought a MBP or an Acer 8200. I am maxing out at $1400, which cuts those two, as well as the Asus W3J out of my options. The Dell as nice cause of the $750 coupon. I am also considering the Asus A8JM and the XPS M1210, do you think that those will be any better?

v43: Oh, that sounds good. Which bag did you get?

I have that bag sitting right next to me. I love it. My e1705 fits perfectly in it. I've had no problems with it. The shoulder strap is slightly padded, it has compartments for everything (I carry my iPod, Digital Camera, cell phone charger, iPod cables and flash drive all in one section, my laptop charger, mouse, and small cd case in another, my laptop in the main, and then on the back I have a mouse pad in there for when I'm gaming.)

It is a little heavy, but I recommend that bag. If it is heavy for you, there's a small folded out water bottle holder for the workout. And the other side has a detachable cellphone holder. What's not to like?

well, i have an 8lbs notebook and i definitely cannot carry that around everyday or for extended periods, my muscles get strained (and i'm a girl - i don't exactly like carrying a backpack). i have to tell you that it will be uncomfortable, especially if you carry other things.

the a8jm will be a lot easier to carry and 7600 can play the same games as the 7900 (although you'll have to lower the specs). the xps m1210 has a better build than the inspiron line IMO, a longer battery life, and weighs a lot less, but you will sacrifice gaming performance with the 7400.

I have the E1705 and I have a Wegner Swiss Bag (was like 75 bucks at Best Buy ) and was the only one that fit 17" Notebooks at that time. I will admit I half to walk like half - three quarters of mile from campus to my House and after that long it does really start to bear down on you but if you are just carrying it on campus, no problem, Be prepared to sit in the back or get some nudges asking you to lower the screen Hehe! ----P.S. I LOVE THIS LAPTOP

Lemme geuss, you go to WSU?? Most of the teachers in my school district were WSU alumni, and were kinda pissed to hear that I was going go to UW, lol.
I will probably only be carrying this laptop for short distances at a time, so it shouldnt be much of a problem, rite? Actually, my dad said that he used to carry a standard ratio 15" Dell Latitude back in the PIII days and he said that it was a pain just to carry it for a couple of blocks, and so he is advising me to get either a 12" or 14" laptop so that its easy to carry (He now has a Latitude X200, which is the corporate version of the old 300m). Considering that the E1705 will be heavier than the old laptop, and that I am about the same size as he is, I probably wont be happy carrying the Dell. As it stands right now, I will probably get an Asus A8Jm.

    First Off... GO COUGS!!!

Now that I got that out of the way, It really depends on what you are going to use the Laptop On. The truth of the fact is that the E1705 is Desktop Replacement Rig,however it happens to have Awesome Video Card For Gaming. If you aren't a heavy gamer then I agree you should probably get the smaller model. I aint exactly big (5'8" 165Lbs) but I really don't mind the weight and the video performance and gaming performance is well worth any extra weight I carry around (not to mention my left shoulder is gettin ripped :D ). Again like I said it is a desktop replacement it isn't really Laptop that was made for Lugging around all the time, however if you don't mind an extra 3lbs and a 17" screen it is a beutiful laptop

GO COUGS... F The Huskies.. :D

I hate the Cougs. They suck and are continuously and perpetually eclipsed by the Huskies, who are eternally and intrinsically superior to the Cougs. :D

Now, back to the E1705, I like it for presicely that reason, the Go7900GS card. its excellent, but I am unsure of whether I will actually use that power. I only play Need for Speed games, which up till now were not so demanding, but MW will barely run smoothly on my desktop system, which is why I am wanting a laptop with good graphics. Also, in teh forseeable future, I am going to do some CAD/ Modeling because of my engineering major. I also want the laptop to last a long time, and the best way to ensure this is to get the best gfx in my budget of $1500. Whether I want to carry the 9lbs and deal with the bulkiness of the laptop is the question. If not, its defietly either a XPS 12" or Asus 14" for me.

This is gonna turn more into a University War if keep this up .... but ohh well. If youre going for Engineering than you definately went to the wrong school, WSU is in the TOP 15 Engineering Schools in the country and UW is nowhere near any type of Top list for Engineering.

As for the Laptop, I had to have a good graphics powerhouse, hence the 7800 Go, the NFS series is gonna get more graphically intense, especially seeings how they are gonna be ports from the 360 and PS3, so if you only play NFS games expect amazing graphics from them upcoming so you will definately need a really good Graphics Card. If you can deal with 9 pounds, listen to these guys about the bags. Trust me on this when you see the graphic performance of these Laptops you will see that it was worth the weight. Being able to crank up Battlefield 2, FEAR, HL2 is always fun

3 Posts in a row...I'm a loser... anyways dude I feel bad this is kinda of my biased opinion. Ifyou are gonna be running around campus and you don't need to be playing games on this too much, go for the XPS 12 I have Co-Workers that swear by the portability of these laptops. First they have excellent battery life, great display, and they are light and easy to just carry around. Would be beneficial for an active College student.

I know that UW has a crappy engineering college, but their ME and CSE depts are pretty good, and thats what I am concerned with. Also, I am an EEP student, so I came 3yrs early to the univ. I dont think that Wazzu offers a program like that, so yea.

The graphical performance and the high gfx reqs for NFS MW and NFS Carbon are the things that I keep coming back to in the E1705.

I would have it plugged in most of the time, no matter what notebook I buy,so yea, batt life is not that much of an issue.
Two things happened today that have turned me off the E1705. One: I went to my university bookstore, who specialize in macs, and I saw this *huge* MBP. I went to a salesman and asked him when they started putting 20" screens on them, but it was a 17" one. I swear, the dv8000 looked a lot smaller, but it really did seem to big.
Also, i carried my old Toshiba around Udistrict for the first time today (w/o my parents knowledge). It weighs like 6.5lbs and 1.2 for the AC Afdapter, and it was really quite heavy after about a quarter mile of walking in the 95 degree heat. So I dont think I would survive with an E1705....lol.

Also, I looked at a 12" Averatec thing with comparable dimensions to the M1210, and it was way too small. I like the 13" widescreen form factor much better.
