my e1705 psu rev A00 gets real hot while charging the battery. Is this normal? Its not like I can't touch it hot but its uncomfortably hot. I hope its not defective or a fire hazard.
Also is it normal for a buzzing sound to emanate while charging the battery?
Thanks in advance for the replies

Yeah, those suckers can run hot when charging and running the laptop. My HP and Arima use 90-watt bricks that can double as heaters, but are quite in operation..
A few manufactures have had recalls on chargers and batteries in the past. I try to keep the charger on a hard surface free from cats and other debris for max airflow.
All these type of chargers use inverters instead of big heavy expensive transformers to step 115vac down to 19-20vdc @ 5amps or so.
If something is buzzing inside this may be nothing more than a component that resonates. I would call Dell and report it and they should send you another but make DELL state this is OK and never take any third party’s word for it as these can be a fire hazard if defective. -
@hydra - I love how you categorize cats as "debris"! Priceless!

No a Buzzing sound is not normal at all!
I remember someone posted about their Zodiac 2 Palm buzzing when it was charging, wasnt a good thing.
Something could be wrong or shorting in a sense. I would report it to Dell indeed. Thats not normal, and if that buzzing is the cause of a defect, that COULD be the answer to why its getting hot too!
Otherwise.. normally a battery will get warm when it charges its cells and not much to worry on. But that buzzing is something you need to check on. -
hmm i guess i'll have to talk to dell about this.
hopefully not more trouble sending it back and such

but what i'm saying is the psu is much hotter when its charging the battery than when it is just running normally. its uncomfortable to the touch when its charging much worse than when its just running
I hope this is normal
edit: sorry to bump the thread -
The buzzing is all fixed now? -
well the next time i'm gonna go mobile i'll check if i notice a buzzing noise when its charging if so i'll be sure to give dell a call

mine runs hotter when its charging but i can hold it comfortably.
no buzzing though. -
My 1705 uses a little under 60watts not charging the battery. When charging the battery power usage goes up to 85watts. This is probably the reason why it gets warmer when charging.

I had a similar problem with the power brick for my M140; it got significantly hot (more so than a comparable power supply for a Lat D610. Same model number/output/etc on the unit), and there was a noticable buzzing noise. I could hear the buzzing quite loudly from 2 feet away, it really threw me for a loop at first, running around the room trying to figure out where that sound was coming from!
The replacement power adapter I received runs maybe 10-15 degrees (C) cooler, and I can hear a faint buzzing only if I put the power supply up to my ear. I'd definitely chalk it up to a faulty original supply, in my case.
For my circumstances, Dell just mailed me a replacement unit. It came with a return label, so I just packed up the old, faulty unit, and called for a pickup. A pretty quick and painless procedure.
e1705 psu hot while charging, normal?
