I have noticed that if i am just word processing or surfing the internet my gpu temp is arround 115-120 F. But if i am unplugged from my ac adapter, the computer changes the speed (core and memory) to lower the power usage.
Is there a way to make it stay at a low speed for everything but gaming?
or is there a program like speedswitchXP but for a GPU?
thanks

been discussed many many times here. Just search this section. To sum things up, high idle temperatures for Geforce Go 7900GS are normal. It actually doesn't increase as you put load on it. You can control GPU temperature by controlling GPU fan using I8kfanGUI program.

Thanks, but I already have my gpu fan on high and it wasnt my question.
I was asking if there was a way to underclock my gpu for everything except gaming. kinda like with mobile cpus, it goes to lower clock speeds when it isnt being used. is there a way to do that besides being unplugged from the AC adapter? -
Try setting your power options, not sure if that would help or not, but it should control everything else at least.

I've tried that, but it doesnt change the speed.
and other ideas? -
to underclock the GPU you need to load a different BIOS. You cannot do it via some application. Loading new BIOS in turn will affect all applications. So no, you cannot underclock it for all but games. You also cannot underclock it (even by messing with the BIOS) past the point that the card underclocks itself to when running on battery.

This is why ATI is better, they have a program to put it on "power save mode" even on pluged in

Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
nvidia has power mizer, wich is similar to ati's power play, you'll have to dig around in the nv control panel to find it

115-120F is not a high temperature for the 7900GS. That's 46-49C. That's actually a very low temperature for that card. Mine idles at 65C (149F).
Also, if you run Rivatuner you'll find that it already does clock down when not gaming. In fact, the clocks are almost off. -

nvidia powermizer can be either turned on (it will downclock the card when on battery) or turned off. So that can't help.
Go7900GS can idle as high as 170F so 120 is very reasonable. Are you sure that you even have Go7900GS and not X1400? -

yes, i've overclocked, i tried before the overclock and it still didnt go down to that... would a newer driver help? -
Thanks everyone.
I updated the driver and now it runs at 0/100 mhz when not gaming and it jumps up when needed.
