My replacement e1505 just shipped and I should get it tomorrow. verified w/ dell that I can interchange components, so was wonderin if the dvd drives are easily removable. If so do I just unscrew something on the bottom and pop it out or do I have to take the whole laptop apart? As always, links would be great.

lol. You dont need to do that.
But thank you. As you can see, yea, its totally easy to do.

You are just getting it and you want to swap parts?
-
well my first one was an nec, don't know what the next one's gonna be. If it's too loud/annoying I'll just replace it. I'm somewhat obsessive, and I'm trying to get the best laptop for my money.

Am I correct in assuming that optical drives come with their own firmware, and therefore don't require drivers? Could only find updates on dell's site; don't wanna be stuck wit an unusable dvd drive...
-
Yes, you dont need the driver.

Cool. Looks like i'm goin to do a lot of tinkering once that replacement arrives
-
To Save time, wont it be easier if you just swap out the hard drive? Put your hard drive with your data into the replacement unit..then it is like you have a whole new computer with your data still there

I didn't do anything to the first one; the main problem was the hard drive (Loud and chirpy). The samsung screen actually wasn't so bad. If the new one's screen is better though, then I might have to start swapping a lot of stuff out.
exchange dvd drives?
