Hello,
I live in Canada and bought Dell from the US. The sales rep that assisted me with the purchase told me if I get the extended warranty (i.e. DellCare Plus or Premium with Dell complete care) that it is covered Internationally.
However, I wanted an official letter craved in stone stating that, so I chatted with dell today. to my surprise, s/he told me that Dell DOES NOT come with international warranty no matter what extended warranty service I get. To make it international I have to fill out a form to basically transfer the warranty to where ever I want.
I was reading through the form and it said the following:
When I click it said:
Does that mean I would loose the Complete care meaning NO coverage for accidental damage protection?
if so that goes 100 percent against what the sales rep told me. He said that I would get *4 years* of in-Home service, parts & labor, 24x7 phone support, theft recovery assistance & accidental damage protection INTERNATIONALLY.
I'm VERY confused; can someone PLEASE clear things up for me....
Thank you

I have been through this personally and you are exactly right. Your warranty is void...no good...because you bought it in the US when Dell has a Cdn subsidiary. They do this to prevent exactly this.
They will also not transfer your warranty because...well...they dont know if ur system is actualy any good or not.
Dell USA will honour your warranty if you have a US address for them to ship packaging materials in case you have to send it in and they will only ship to a US address. -
so the sales rep lied to me?
-
According to the International Tag Transfer page, ONLY the Next Business Day warranty is transferable. Everything else would be void. Yes, the Dell rep lied to you.
-
WHAT A BUNCH OF LIERS. I'm going to have to cancel the order then.
-
Can someone please help me.... I'm looking for a laptop in Canada that has the following specs:
T7500, 2.2GHz, 800Mhz, 4M L2 Cache or better
2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm or better (expandable to 4GB)
glossy widescreen 15.4 inch display ( 1680x1050)
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT or better ( DX10 comp)
160G 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive or better
Whatever is in bold is a must have -
OK
I'm going to order from Canada.
Here's what the sales rep is offering (good or Not) Prices is in CANADIAN DOLLARS:
1520, T7500(2.2GHZ) CORE 2 DUO
VISTA PREMIUM STICKER, INSP
1GB,DDR2,667MHZ,2 DIMM
HIGH RESOLUTION, GLOSSY WIDESCREEN 15.4
256MB NVIDIA GEFORCE 8600M GT
160G HARD DRIVE, 7200RPM
integrated webcam and wireless-n-draft
1797 + tax
ok so the question is:
I know about the memory upgrade topic here in this forums. However, any deals here in Canada for a 4GB ram I found the following, is that the right one or not?
btw, I got 3 years completecare from Dell. upgrading the RAM should NOT void the warranty, correct. I know it doesn't in the US, however, is it the same in Canada? -
It doesn't void the warranty, correct.
And that RAM is the correct ones.
Another option you may want to consider is the ASUS G1s, which you can probably get for the same price.
ASUS G1s = $1950~ MSRP(You can probably find lower), they have a $50 USD mail in rebate right now, and if you purchase it from a store out of province, you only need to pay PST.
1520 = 2040 after tax(assuming you are from Ontario of course, highest tax atm @ 14%
G1s = 2086 after taxes(7% buying out of province) - $50USD rebate($56 cdn around) = 2036
So it's pretty similar, the prices and the system(The G1s offers same processor, 2gb RAM, same screen type(WSXGA+), a faster 86000GT, 2 years int'l warranty(opposed to the 3 years Complete which may be a dealbreaker).
The Compal IFL90 too, will probably be cheaper and the same specs as configured above but the problem is finding it in Canada. Of course, the Vostro 1500 is an option to consider as well. -
I wouldn't spend $360 for 2x2GB of RAM just yet, if you don't need it in the near future. You can get 2x1GB of RAM for under $100 CAD so I'd get that and wait a year until the 2GB modules are cheaper. When I bought my laptop, a 2GB RAM upgrade was over $200 so I declined and got it when I needed 2GB for Vista. I only paid $80 for 2GB in May.
EDIT: If you really want 4GB now, this is a much better deal.

I dont think that is true.
His at-home sevice warranty can be transferred I belive. He would lose completecare though.
Does anyone know if On-site service is the same as NBD on-site service with respect to international warranties ? -
I was told on the the phone that with my limited warranty, I could still receive service in the U.K. I had it assured to me! For example I asked if a part malfunctioned, could a Dell service rep from the UK help, I was told absolutely.
-
-
NBD (at home) & Complete Care when bought on a system, for 3 years or more, do cover that system internationally, right ?
Got confused as some claimed yes while others disagreed... My understanding has been when one buys 3 or more years, internationally is automatically covered.
Could someone please confirm ? -
I just read the US and Canadian fineprint which is found with warranty Transfer information. The only warranty that can transfer is Next Business Day. I would think you will have difficulty though as a consumer being as Dell has separate companies in both the US and Canada. There import/export guidelnes are specifically for that.
-
-
Complete Care definitely would not be covered since the International Tag Transfer fine print specifically says that Complete Care cannot be transferred.
-
-
I have been watching that thread and, unfortunately it has little to do with Canadian purchases as Fryes, Overstock etc... do not ship to Canada.

I'm going through this exact same ordeal right now. I purchased my D830 from the US, and had it shipped to my cousin in New York, for her to bring it here to the Philippines for me. Here's the breakdown of my "4-year Gold Coverage, 4-Year Accidental Damage, Complete Care* (includes international warranty)" Warranty:
As long as I'm in the continental US, all my warranty coverages are fully applicable. If I'm traveling out of the US (and my warranty is still based there), then the warranty coverage will be subject to the local Dell or local Dell Authorized Service Provider. In my case, the local ASP would charge various fees for everything from diagnostics to parts replacements, etc.
However, if you intend to be based in another country altogether and do not plan to reside in the country of original purchase, then you can fill out the International Warranty Tag Transfer Form. This effectively puts your system under warranty jurisdiction of your country of choice. Check the fine print, however. In my case, it turns out I would still have to pay a flat diagnostic fee (amounting to roughly 32USD) for every issue. My coverage in the Philippines is limited to "Parts-Only Warranty," meaning the only thing I DON'T pay for is the part they replace a defective piece with. I STILL have to pay the diagnostic fees, however.
I was also told that if I had purchased the unit from the local distributor, the diagnostic fees would have been waived and the Warranty Coverage would have been significantly expanded. But the reason I didn't buy this notebook from them was because they quoted me at nearly 70% more than the US prices.
Caveat Emptor. -
First paragraph seems to be a breach of the contract between yourself and DELL.
This form should be completed and submitted to Dell whenever a unit is being physically transferred from one country to another, and may or may not involve a transfer of ownership. There will be no additional cost for the transfer of NBD (next business day) service contracts to countries with whom Dell does direct business; however, there may be additional costs for same day contracts. In addition, transfers can only be completed to countries in which Dell normally does business. Please allow at least 5 business days for processing.
Contract types and models not available for transfer:
Return to Depot, Complete Care, Same Day, and Parts Only contracts are NOT AVAILABLE FOR TRANSFER outside of the region the coverage was purchased in.
Axim’s, Printers, Stand alone Monitors, Projectors, and TV’s are NOT AVAILABLE FOR INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER.
Dimension 5000 and Inspiron 510M models are NOT AVAILABLE FOR INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER.
Not all other models are available for transfer - please inquire DIRECTLY with your intended destination country if your model can be transferred.
Once DELL claims there`s no cost to transfer a given contract/model then all terms of contract must be followed.
South Asia - Philippines explicitely included is mentioned thus no additional costs can be included or that would be a breach to terms of contract.
I`d try pressing this issue with DELL directly - as local Distributor is mostly interested in servicing systems sold directly by them - to push their own sales. -
I've canceled my order from Dell US and got it from Dell Canada for this exact problem.
I did investigate this issue. Say your monitor got damaged within your warranty service, the monitor cost is honored by the warranty, however, like freefisheater said, there would be labour charges.
As I said I've canceled my order with Dell US and bought it from Canada, it was an extra ~330 CAN dollars.
it you really want TRUE international warranty, Thinkpads and Panasonic (thoughbooks) are the kings in honoring their international warranty. It doesn't matter you bought it from the US or from Mars, coverage is the same... -
Got in touch with Dell outside US and was informed that they provide service to systems under warranty once the transference has been done. Transference is accepted in the other country as long as the model is sold/supported in that country. Once transferred the system becomes local, no charges of any nature, just as in the country of origin. Additional info, refer to my earlier post.
Complete care, for systems acquired in a country, is valid only in that country.
Cheers. -

Apparently, however, if I transferred my system to a country with an actual Dell, Inc. office (i.e. Malaysia), my warranty options would be much broader. Disappointing, particularly since one of the main reasons for my having purchased the D830 was for warranty coverage in tha Philippines. (The local ASP only honors warranties on Latitudes, and no other systems.)
iamcanadian, yeah. Thinkpads still have the best International Warranty Policy out there, bar none. If only their systems came with more than the paltry 1-year Depot as standard... I might have chosen the T61p (or m) over this D830. -
Support Dept. was aware of the international transferences option but referred me to Post-Sales-International Transferences. In this Department they started asking the service tag - without it, we proceeded with general questions, such as whether a given model would be locally supported.
Once support is confirmed, I was informed I should submit my request to the Geo where the system had been originally purchased requesting such transference - and should allow from a few days up to 30 days max.
I was also given the impression that Support / Pos-sales are much more used with having Latitude models being internationally transferred - other models may not have parts locally, thus not supported locally.
Understand you have an additional layer of issues with the ASP. I`d ask DELL Corp, or the nearest Dell subsidiary in Philippines whether those fees are usual and would ask for any advice.
Good luck and please keep us posted on how it all evolves for our reference. Thanks. -
I'm also interested in a Dell (XPS M1530) but I'm uncertain about warranties and from experience with many notebooks, it is definitely required.
I'm also from the Philippines and we only have ASP's here. Btw, I read on the papers that Dell has officially launched their consumer line (including XPS) but I'm not sure how ASP's handle international warranties. Anyone have any experience in this setup?
About Thinkpads, I have to agree. I have bought several Thinkpads from the US in the past and my local service center has honoured all my warranty claims.
Unfortunately, Lenovo doesn't have something like the XPS M1530 at the moment so I may get a Dell as long as there's some sort of warranty available.
