This isn't really a question specifically about Dell laptops, but you guys are helpful so I will go ahead and post anywayz. Recently I made my own external hard drive, using a Samsung Spinpoint 80gb 5400rpm hd and a Vantec Nexstar 3 NST-250U2 external hdd enclosure. It works fine except for the fact that when I plug it in, it takes more than 2 minutes for the hd to get recognized by windows and show up in my computer, which can be really annoying at times. Is this typical of external hdds, or should I think about returning the enclosure and getting a new one? Also, does the fact that I have the hard drive set as a slave make a difference? I read up on google and some people are sayign that it should be set to master.

Is your notebook USB 2.0 compatable? How old is it?

I am pretty sure it is capable, because I just got it in July. It is a Dell Inspiron E1505.

Yes, it definitely should be set to master (or "single") if it's in an enclosure by itself like that. That likely is the problem.

Your machine will have no problem with USB 2.0.

Sorry to invade your thread but I have a question too about my external HDD. It's a Western Digital 250 GB and it works perfectly except it 'loads' a lot. It's like it is in standby or something and every once in a while the blue light will shine bright (showing activity) and my computer will freeze depending on what I am doing. For example, I am trying to access one of my partions on my External HDD or even opening up IE. It will do it randomly. Doesn't affect me much, just have to wait a few secs for it to load but it just seems weird.
