Well, after more than 4 months 'just waiting' for a decent deal, I finally make a purchase of the m1330 that had discounts and the like (300$ off + 200$ gift card).
As I wait to receive it, all I can do is worry about the build. WHY should I have to WORRY about the build? WHY? *i don't even know how to articulate a phrase that expresses my confusion and anger about this* Shouldn't I be able to just get the laptop and start using it once school starts?! How about consumers that don't know about these things and settles for loose panels and wobbly bases. No one should have to SETTLE after paying more than 1k.
This may sound RIDICULOUS, I understand this is petty and that the 'getting a new laptop' is just a mere convenience over my other 5 year old laptop. But how would you feel, waiting since August to get a new laptop and just keep thinking about how much more convenient a lighter, faster computer would benefit yourself. I no longer have to wait 5 minutes to boot windows, and many more just to run Microsoft word. Always, in the back of my mind,' I was finally getting a new laptop.' I already SAVED up all my money to pay for the thing. This is the biggest purchase I've ever made with my own money. Finally you get the laptop, and now. o no, you have to return it.
Finally, I get my m1330, I open it up and I was so happy. Then I followed the instructions to booting it up and noticed the hinge on the left had a gap. I 'settled' to just later reapply the panel. A large gap still resides. o well. Then the whine. Oh my God. The whine from this thing. (haha, I guess I'm "whining" as well... )
How would you feel trying to write an paper in the privacy of your room, only to be accompanied by some high pitched beeping from your laptop? Just using my m1330 for more than a few hours gives me a headache from the sound. If the m1330 was constantly making clicking sounds, etc. I wouldn't mind, as my old laptop did the same. BUT a HIGH pitched tone going off. wow...
I thought that these build issues where uncommon. They might still be, but I can't believe I'm stuck with this. I was eager to finally use the laptop once I get back to college on the 7th of January, never again to worry about the issues I had about my old laptop.
All I can say now, is that I plan to return the thing. What can ensure that the next one I get doesn't have the whine? My dad doesn't want me to get a replacement either since he says Dell might send me refurbished material.
I've been here since July, reading your guys' posts and responding. I enjoyed helping others with their issues, so I don't think I'll be leaving the forums indefinitely. And if your saying, "who needs this guy anyways" o well. I'm sorry I had to whine about the issue, it just hits me hard.
I just wanted to rant about my issue, an issue I was hoping I never had to come across since I made the purchase.
The laptop was literally at my fingertips and it will have to be pulled away.
Happy holidays guys.

Well if it's less than like 21 days or something they'll give you a new one IIRC.
-
You have to return it within 21 days of the ordering day... call them now..
I feel your pain . same thing happened to me . mine had a non fixed bottom monitor edge.... send it back next day.. but that was good because I got the new one with better LCD res (M1530 not 1330).. -

I just spoke with two Dell people and they both told me they can resolve the issue by sending a new one. My dad is worried that the 'new' laptop sent might not be new. I would love to use this laptop for school this upcoming semester, but I don't want to keep getting returns if each one I get keep having the same issue.

If it's within 21 days, you should get a new one. I would make sure though, if they can't guarantee you a new one then just sent it back for credit. Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

Don't worry, it won't be a refurb or anything. Its under 21 days, they will make a new order and give you the order number, it has to go through building and whatnot, so it will def be a new laptop. The whining on my laptop pretty much went away, every once in a while it will whine for 30 seconds, but I can live with it. The uneven base and the L-shaped plastic by the hinge really annoyed me though so I called in for an exchange. Just call!

Well, I hope your next one comes in perfect sickZ.
I'll see what I can do about getting a new one....I can't believe I'm going to be worrying again about whine/build issues... -
Let us know how it goes. Dell is good about replacing their product with new ones until you're satisfied.

My XPS M1530 failed after 2 days I used it
I think I used it total less than 6 hours!! I cannot boot it at all.
Dell told me they will replace the motherboard and I’ve to wait about 1 week because part shortage. Now I’m pushing them to replace and give me new one because to change the motherboard you have to dissemble and reassemble it right? Better give me a new one.
The main point is my notebook is still new -

I feel the same way you do. Luckily I had no whine or gap, but my keyboard looks horrible. I knew that dell had issues with this computer when I was buying it but I figured I would go for it. Dell is sending me a new keyboard and I should be set up fairly good. I hope your replacement is good.
-
Unlogic, order a replacement system if its within 30 days. It is 30 days for a system replacement and not 21. Alot get confused because of the Total Satisfaction Commitment which is 21 days in the US 'for a return of merchandise'.
Workinprogress,
Dont fret. You get to keep that system until the new one arrives. You may be able to talk nicely and get some reductions/merchandise from them...
Next, you can still set the system up now how you want it and just trade the hard drive when the new one comes in. In this case, make sure you trade the ram plate with the OS serial and the two OS master disks so you have the right one. -

Thanks for all the support guys. I hope all your guy's replacements come back nice as well. I just wish we didn't have to deal with all this.
I don't think I'll be able to get reduction/merchendise since when I talked to them, the conversation did not stray that way. I just want my configuration, I would be glad if they gave me reductions but we'll have to see.
Thanks for the tip on the hdd as well. i'll make sure to do that if I install anything -
In canada you have 30 days to try the laptop and see if anything goes wrong. My 1520 has enourmous light leakage ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=199768) and I called customer service right away. If you're still in that 21/30 days period, they send you a NEW (not refurbished) notebook, and when you get it you send back the broken one. After that period however (once you fall in the technical support's warranty deal), you will have to send the notebook, have it fixed with refurbished parts and wait for it to come back.
-
Not exactly correct....
The 30 day period can be extended if the next one is similar. I know of at least 3 people who had received 4 replacement systems before a good one arrived. Happens.
And, if you got NBD service, they come to your house the next business day to fix it. If you got depot, you would have to send it in. It depends on the warranty, and again, how you speak to the XPS Tech. There are many cases where they went to someones home on Depot warranties.
As for getting compensation, read this:

Its done many very well. -

I just have the basic warranty.
If anything, an extended warranty would be nice compensation, I like my configuration. I just wish I had a notebook that is clear of any build issues. -
I got mine back in September and it also had a few minor issues with it. Back then, I had asked myself if I had waited until the rush was over if the quality issues would be gone, but obviously not.
That's a real shame because the M1x30 series are really nice Notebooks, design and component-wise, but Dell really needs to work out the quality problems, particularly with their more expensive XPS line! -
WorkinProgress Notebook Evangelist
Well, I was able to request a replacement after almost an hour being transfered back and forth.
Sadly, the only compensation I hope for is just a perfect m1330. -
Technical Support or Customer Service? -
It is customer support who starts the process but tech support that approves the replacement so...either/or...
-
Just a question, I'm planning on ordering an m1330 tomorrow and I'm very concerned about quality issues. I chatted with sales, and they told me if I have "quality issues" I could return the notebook without paying the restocking fee.
I just wanted to confirm, is that correct? I'm worried that the chat guy is just saying things to make sure I buy. My biggest concern is the "whine", and other overall build issues. ALso, I don't want to get have to get a replacement, I'd rather just return it and go back to my Dell D620.
Thanks. -
I hope I get reply and answer from customer support soon (whether to fix it or to replace with completely new laptop) before the technician come and strip down my new laptop
Btw, I’m from Malaysia. This is first time I’m dealing with Dell and I hope Dell Malaysia customer service will be good as Dell USA.
