Well a computer can make a lot of possible sounds. But judging from your description I'd say the sound you are hearing is the sound the processor makes when idle. If you run some programs the noise goes away. One way to fix this which works for alot of people is to download RMclock and check the box that says "Run HLT command when OS is idle"

Its probably the HD if anything, unless its a buzzing noise comming from the speakers, which is a different thing. Its completely normal for the HD to make some soft clicking noises if the computer is turned on.

Well, the HD makes more of a mechanical clicking sound. I think the sound he's describing is a more electronic sounding high pitched buzzing/whining, and only occurs if the CPU is idle. Anyway the run HLT command fix works for most people. Read the following thread for more info (some people with similar problems)

I have a 640m and it also makes a "clicking" sound. It does seem to do it more often when the computer is idle, but I can't figure it out. It is somewhat annoying. I have a feeling it is the hard drive. My girlfriend has the 6000, but it doesn't seem to make much noise at all. Very odd...

That is kinda what mine sounds like too...although there are numerous crickets outside my window, so there is definitely a difference

also, i have another question. When you tap on the scrolls on the right side and the bottom of the scrollpad, does it act as a left click? it does for mine...is this normal?

Interestingly enough, I get a faint clicking sound too. It sounds just like when one gets a new message on IRC but as if you had ear pluggs on and can bearely ear it. It happens when the computer is on sometimes every minute or two and other times longer intervals

it seems like its pretty constant most of the time...like a very faint fast clicking sound....after i double click something it seems to do 4 slightly louder of these clicking noises..i dont mind it raelly because its pretty ffaint...i'd be fine with it if i knew it was normal...although slightly annoying but probably because im actually trying to hear it

i guess a better term would be a ticking sound...counstant clicking but much faster then a clock

i get these clicking/ticking sounds from my hd, too. i am assuming it's a mechanical sound from the hd and this seems to happen when the hd STARTS reading data.
i've had the 6000 for over a year now and the sound hasn't increased, decreased or anything.

The noise you are hearing is coming from the hard drive. It is definitely NOT the processor. Hard drives make that faint clicking noise as the heads move.
