Use ik8fan; it might work for your model, it might not. Search google for it.

They should release a new version updated for the new line of laptops - it would definitely come in handy. Not that I'm having any problems with mine, more that I would enjoy the extra security that comes with having the software.

Not sure exactly how you get extra security from having the software? I mean I prefer that we can't mess around with the settings - who knows how many "my notebook is too hot" posts we'd get otherwise ;)

Fair enough, but I'd think that actually taking the initiative to install the program would indicate some working knowledge of the linkage between fan speed and laptop temperatures. I'm the kind of person who would set it to default to the fastest speed, irrelevant of noise.

The sense of security comes from having some control over my machine that way - me being somewhat of a control freak when it comes to things like this. Just to give you an idea , the thing I dislike most about windows 7 is the fact that litestep skinning and theming software doesn't work too well with windows 7. it's what I miss most from XP on my old comp. That being said, of course, win7's UI is good enough that I'm not about to switch back.

i agree, actually all laptops should have better ventilation system, most likely they have an agreement/tieup with the vendors who make cooling pads etc so that laptop vendors keep supplying laptops that heat and cooling pads will sell like hot cakes. I had bought two laptop coolers for my laptop and my wifes. Soon the laptop coolers started to make lot of noise and they died .. dont know why they cant use better fans, is it rocket science ?

Anyways my wifes lenovo y410 was getting too hot and its internal fan used to make so much some at times it looks at though it was about to take off. I opened the damn lappy and i cleaned it fully, brushed it and i saw a lot of dust there. I guess its a good idea to keep cleaning the vents. Though given the fact that we have dedicated graphics etc, its time technology of cooling improves, i am tired of seeing laptops getting hot - period.

somehow, i don't think it's a conspiracy. It's more likely that crappy fan manufacturers offer their fans for less, so more laptop manufacturers go with the cheaper options, to keep their prices/costs low. Think of it this way - how much would most people really pay for a laptop that didn't do much better aside from stay cooler?

If the better fan's higher prices result in a hit to their profits, they aren't about to go for it. It's a simple equation, really.

Cleaning vents is probably a good idea, though, as laptops are more often used in areas with dust and dirt, so all sorts of random dirt and trappings get stuck in there. Also, their portable form factor isn't the best for airflow, hence you should be mindful of that.

Here is the site for i8kfangui, but I don't think it'll work on your laptop (1737?)...

EDIT: Bah, Cin beat me to it.

To get around the required signed driver you can run windows in test mode; but it does leave your machine more vulnerable to the things that signed drivers are supposed to stop. Google for readydriver plus

And there's the downside that disabling driver signing only works for that particular boot...you'll have to manually disable it on every boot.

    Well yes, but no ;)

ReadyDriver plus basically does it for you. It simulates keystrokes at boot, you can sit there and watch it do it.

    Oh, that's fancy.

Still, not as good as an actual signed driver. :p
