    atbnet, I salute you.

i've been keeping track of the studio xps mania since september, and i jumped out of the band wagon and bought a sony z about a month ago. during my share of the xps studio rumor, i daily tracked every new posts if the rumor was true or false, if there was any update of the rumor, and if the release date is figured out. Every other posts, I see you and a few other nbr members who had hope that the rumor was true. It was a constant struggle of "yeah-huh" and "na-uh". But you always stood taking the many facts that the rumor was false. You held through till today, and the fruits of your labor led you to rightness and truth. You and a few others led the pack of hope that the rumor existed...

and for that, I respect you.

Man I almost bought an HP today (I do like their DV5T since it has all I could want except for the fingerprint magnets their finishes are and the legendary bad (i.e. much worse than Dell) support they are known for).

I guess I can still go order it from Costco and as long as this comes out in the next 90 days, I can return it. I'd feel bad, but hey...

I'm new to the Dell notebook line. Do these XPS models come with a metal alloy casing/cage like most business line notebooks from the likes of HP/Lenovo?

don't think so. but, i believe, that the xps line is brushed aluminum so no roll cage but aluminum. perhaps if u are looking to buy something new, fill out the FAQ in a new thread.

Brushed aluminum is nice. :) They are more scratch resistance and after owning a few notebooks with metallic covers, I'm staying far away from the plastic counterparts that tend to loose its color and shine after a year or so.

Is the laptop in the link the rumored XPS laptop?

I am not sure which chipset the Intel ULV chips use right now. It is more of an ultraportable, possibly business, but more for consumers. The picture above is the Studio XPS.

Calpella won't be out until Q3 2009 and even then the ULV will be later than that.

I googled ULV and it shows it's already being used. Isn't Calpella going to incorporate a non FSB architecture?

It's actually the LV version they use. Yeah Calpella will be like Nahalem and not use the FSB.

No, its on time. Quad Core Nehalem is coming in Q3 and Dual core with integrated graphics built in is coming Q1 2010. Both dual and quad core are supposed to 32nm and both should use less power than current Core 2 quad and dual cores.

So when will it shrink to 32nm? Since Sandy Bridge the new 32nm platform is coming in 2010, Westmere the refresh of Nehalem to 32nm should be end of 2009 to early 2010, in time for Calpella launch, right?

It will be into 2010 when they release the die shrink mobile processors. Intel plans on rolling out the 32nm process in late 2009.

    So:

Q3-Q4 2009: 45nm Nehalem Quad and Dual Cores (with graphics onboard)
    Q1-Q2 2010 32nm shrink to Westmere
Q3-Q4: Sandy Bridge 32nm architecture launch

It usually goes Platform -> die shrink -> Platform. Nahalem is the new platform -> Westmere die shrink to 32nm -> Sandy Bridge platform.

But those are the desktop/server dates. The mobile changes usually lag behind a bit, as you can see with Calpella (Nahalem equiv) coming about a year after it showed up in desktops/servers.

my only question is about the graphics card. any word on whether there is a plan to put a real gaming card option? It is strange to me that my old i9300 has a better card than is available in the new Studio 15 (I have 6800go) and not too far of from the XPS. They really need a graphics refresh if they are going to say anything about gaming in reference to their systems.

I plan on getting a new Laptop when they shrink the Capella down to 32nm.

    Penryn(Desktop)=Monetveniea(Mobile) Centrino 2
    Nehalem(Desktop)=Capella(Mobile) Core i7

its the same stuff they just change the code names for desktop and mobile.

Core i7 and Centrino 2 are the final advertising brand names.

Core i7 at 32nm and Hybrid SLI graphics and a 45nm or 32nm GPU and Intels Low voltage Chipset should prove very energy efficient

Also I took a closer look at that 13 Studio XPS shown on Engadget.

Wonder why DELL killed it with no SD card slot and no 54 ExpressCard Slot.

But aside from that metal hinge same Studio Hinge design and style except with a Lather backing and that Shiny shiny Black will get oily and ugly.

it looks good lets just see some specs.

I am more Interested in the Studio XPS 1640.

I doubt it will have Hybrid SLI graphics I can hope.
just knowing it will have DDR3 RAM is killing me.

And as for Graphics, my guess is either an ATI 3650 or something from NVIDIA with 512MB GDDR3 RAM. Anything less will be a disapointment.

well, if u guys haven't noticed yet, the new xps 1640 has support for ddr3 ram, a 16:9 screen good for bluray and is RGBLED, so very good. it also comes with the latest intel processors and a radeon 3670 card from ati which is about on par with the previous gen 8600m gt. the 1340 has support for ddr3 ram as well and can carry processors up to 2.53ghz in speed, while the 1640 can have up 8gb of ram with a 2.8ghz processor. the 1340 can up to a WXGA screen (also a choice for LED). the 1640 can come with a max of a 1920x1200 screen( fulll HD). the 1340 has unknown battery life but the 1640 clocks in at about 2 .5 hrs with the 9 CELL. the 6 CELL gives about 2hrs. both laptops come with synaptics touchpads( YES!!) AND backlit keyboards. they also pose a striking resemblance to the new macbooks/pros from apple with the speaker grills and the shiny screws and the edge to edge glass. also, i am not sure about the 1340 but the 1640 is said to have excellent sound quality from its speakers due to its built in subwoofer.
hope u guys will order one! a great alternative if u like the looks of the macbooks/pros but don't want to pay a hefty price tag. the new XPS studios start at 1,999 bucks a piece. a very nice config can be had for 2k or less. also, the xps 1640 is having a special offer for a 49 dollar upgrade to a BD drive. better order quickly!! they look very sexy this time around. looks like a hit to me!!
