This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

    Does anyone here connect firewire to anything with the laptop ON? With my desktop I always shut it down before hooking my video camera to it...

    I hot connect my firewire hard drive all the time with no problem.

    I have a 300GB firewire Hard drive that I connect while my laptop is on with no problems as well.

    Firewire is designed to be hot-swappable. If it's a separate powered device, you might want to turn it off first, to avoid a short (but that problem doesn't really exist anymore)
