ive never bougth a dell before, but ive always been wary of warrantys, because i know for a fact that this is where companies make loads of money.

do people who buy dells usually get warranty? how good at they are honoring it? do they usually fix your problem? any and all opinions greatly appreciated

I didn't get any extended warranty, but the CSR said I could extend within the free year if I wanted. It seems like most people get the accident warranty, and dell honors that pretty well from what I've heard.

If you don't want a company to make money, why are you buying their products?

Warranties are well worth the cost in my opinion. I've never bought an electronic device without a full extended warranty, and on each device (discman, mp3 player, DS, etc) the warranty has paid itself off. Accident coverage (drops, spills, etc) at the very least is well worth the cost.

yeah i have an e1405 and i've used my warranty on several occasions (i only have the free 1 year warranty). i think its definitely worth it, i would have gotten the 3 year plan if i had the money.

With my 1520, I got the 3-year accidental damage warranty, just in case anything happens.

Wife and myself have owned D600 x 2, D610, D620 and D630. The whole time between all machines only turned up two bad (Fujitsu) hard drives. We get 3 years on the Latitudes, so it was covered. However if we had to purchase the warranty, it may have been cheaper to just purchase the drives separately.

Your mileage may vary, but if the cost of the warranty is reasonable enough, better to have it than not.

I am usualy not a big warranty buyer, but from what I have always read, getting one with a laptop including AD is a good buy if you use your laptop on the go. It does make decent sense as well, you figure if your going to school, the laptop will be in a bag moving, then on your desk, exposed to tons of things that can hurt it... Of course it depends on what you consider worth insuring, 400$ laptop, maybe not. a 1300$ laptop, I would because thats more than I am willing to lose.

A soft rule of thumb I've always gone by is that if the warranty's more than 10% of the purchase price of the item you're buying, it's not worth it. Normally you can haggle warranty prices as well in stores.

I always get 3 years plus accidental. I had one laptop for 1 year then I spilled coffe on it. What I paid for the warrenty to get a new laptop was alot cheaper than buying one.

Actually, one of the reasons I keep buying Dell computers is because of the warranty service. I had my optical drive replaced while I was abroad. The drive broke on my old 5000e. Not many vendors provide in-home service for a laptop. If you're concerned, just buy it with an Amex card and they'll extend the warranty for a year. imho, Amex service is the best.

i think that a warranty is an absolute MUST! I love computers and yet I still don't know how I have been so careless with them!! You never know when an accident is going to happen and you never want to take a chance when, let's say, a year down the road you are typing on your computer and a key breaks off for some unknown reason...then you're stuck with it! With a good warranty, dell will fix ANYTHING- practically! I never had a warranty on my computer, my boyfriend did. BY ACCIDENT :) I dropped my brush on his computer and it cracked the screen!! Dell came next day to replace it! After a reformat, the computer wasn't right...dell changed the hardware out! The charger to his computer broke, dell shipped him a new one... The point is, accidents and malfunctions happen randomly and the only way to be prepared for them is to have a warranty... I wish I did because my computer is basically sitting in the bag not getting any use because 1) the speakers are broken, 2)won't turn on unless it is plugged in, 3)the charger is broken, 4)the fan is ridiculously hot, and 5)it makes a humming noise... I love my 700m but it is a piece of trash now because I didn't have a warranty! I didn't seriously damage my computer, it just started falling apart. So you just never know when and for what you are going to need a warranty.

    Sorry, that was long!

I havent read the entire post but I asked somebody once if warranties are really worth it since Im careful with my toys, and he replied with "you dont go out of the way to hurt yourself but you still have medical insurance right?".

Not that I agreed by any means with his analogy it did make sense somewhat, and I have had nothing but good experiences with warranties.

One Im VERY proud of, I bought a $3000 extended warranty for our S500, and they have paid out 9 grand in repairs over the last 30,000 miles :)

How much are the three year warranties? Around $300 right? Or even more?

So if I buy a $1300, a $300 warranty is definitely not worth it
