Did the replacement whine too? I received a brand new xps m1330 on friday and the whine is unbearable with an A04 motherboard. I'm really upset as I thought they would of fixed the issue by now as I've never heard a computer make this sound before. I'm wondering if sending it back for a new computer would be worth the trouble, as it appears to be such a common thing that I fear I would just get another whining/hissing computer. Are there m1330's out there that don't whine? Its giving me the worst headache.

    Thanks for any info.

Haha, are you on your first exchange? Don't be surprised if you have to do 3+ exchanges to get a properly working machine. I did like 5 exchanges and returned it for good.

Mine does not whine and I have also the A04 mother board.

I am exchanging it though because of heat issues and screen and battery issues.

Hopefully the new one solve those issues but will not whine.

Have you ever had one that you could hear whining? Let us know if your new one whines. If you get 2 that don't whine i'm gonna say you just can't hear it. Cuz there is NO WAY IN HECK! that I've had 3 m1330's and 1 motherboard replacement and haven't been able to get a silent system.

Time for me to call customer service. I can't take this noise. I wonder what laptop i should buy next :(. I'm gonna miss this baby ;'(.

go for an SZ if you have the money, or an ASUS U3 if you dont mind an external DVD drive and the leather palm rests.

Well they offered me 150 bucks and even more free warranty to keep the m1330. It's too bad it wasn't a cosmetic defect or something that didn't cause physical pain (headaches hurt :p). That i could live with, but the noise... I had to turn them down. The lady on the phone sounded like she felt my pain. I think I might cry when I box this little beauty and send it back.

A lot of the nice portable powerhouses have stupid things that make me not want them. I`m kinda afraid of Sony. I don`t want a memory card reader on my computer if it`ll only read MS Pro. I don`t use that crap. Then there are those other nice ones that have everything except a optical drive. I can`t live without that :p. Who knows when you`ll have the urge to just sit down and burn a CD/DVD, lol. Ok back to being serious. Leather palm wrests is a really stupid idea.

Can you tell me what specs your SZ had and the price? Also can i see some pictures of it. The ones in the review suck.

Dell has till Feb to at least mention a Penryn M1330. Hopefully the new processors don't whine. This computer was for school, i bought it well in advance and gave them lots of tries to send a perfect system. Now school has started and i need the computer, i don't have time to keep wasting with them.

I'll use my old POS Compaq with a dying screen until i decide on which computer to get, but i'm not gonna wait forever for Dell.

My 5th one works good, the rest had issues from cpu whine, sd slot not working, defects etc., this last one I have had for about 2 months and is working really good. It took over 3 months to get one that finally worked.

So you firmly believe that there is no such a thing as a M1330 that does not whine.

What I'm saying is I don't know what to believe. I don't know of anyone who has had a quiet system and had it replaced with noisy one. I also don't know of anyone who had a noisy one and ended up with a quiet one.

So either all the people who had quiet ones and had it replaced with other quiet onces can't hear the noise, or me and many other people here are REALLY unlucky.

It would be nice if there were quiet M1330s though. Cuz man is this notebook perfect otherwise :'(.

so after 2 motherboard replacements (both were the wrong revision), they finally admitted they have no way of controlling what revision gets sent out. so their solution was to send me a replacement brand new laptop. the new ones arrives, it's indeed an A04, but alas still has the noise. i've concluded that having an A04 motherboard doesn't really help, so my solution now is to use RMClock and disabling Popdown (it's better than disabling C4 b/c that causes my system to randomly freeze up).

Anyway, what I really want to know is: for the people that got replacement laptops, did Dell ever ask for the old one back?? I didn't get any shipping labels or instructions on sending the old one back. I'm pretty alright with this whining problem if it means I got an extra laptop heh.. Especially since there is a decent fix like RMClock.
