How do you check your current firmware version? I have a Studio 1535 with the TSST TS-T633A.

how can I tell what revision my 1737 came with??

because my 1737 refuses to Burn DVD-R media period. DVD+R Burns perfectly no errors so far.

But I never see a full 8x Burn speed

download the file, it'll interrogate your system and tell you what revision you have before you flash the drive - I've got to say though, unless you bought the laptop VERY recently I suspect this firmware will be newer than the one you have.

Same as above applies to your question, however I can tell you I had the exact same issues with DVD-R's and trying to burn ANY format disc at more than 3x (CD or DVD) would fail... not so any more!
