yes you HAVE to re-install vista that came with it..uhmm id just recommend getting your hands on vista CD and then using the serial on the bottom of the laptop. that would be the best way. you could get dell to send u a CD, but that might put you outside of the return policy, dunno how long you've had your laptop!

ok here we go....when you installed XP did you format the entire system? If not, you can hit F8 (I believe) when the system starts to restore the original system.

    If not follow these instructions...

    1. Call customer support at 800-847-4096 1-2-1 and tell the Rep you want to initiate a Total Satisfaction return. There is a department designated for this.

    2. Once put through explain the situation regarding the OS and I dont think there will be a problem whatsoever. They will only be deleting the OS when it is stripped to be used as refurb pars anyway. Make sure you get the name of the Rep for reference.

    3. You will get a RMA number and case number from the Rep. They will send a courier for pickup or email you a mailing label for you to send via courier.

This must be within 30 days.

When I returned my D620, I didn't bother reinstalling the OS. I simply wiped out all the partitions and let it come up as "Missing OS" when you started the computer.

I didn't have any problems with doing this either and got a full refund....so you don't HAVE to reinstall Vista! ;)
