    is the dell xps 1530 considered a good laptop for gaming/photoshop/media editing ?

    or is a 17" better for that matter?

    Just by size a 17" is probably better.

    I would say so that's what I am buying it for. Of course you will probably be on Med or Med-High settings for games with the 8600GT but that's good enough for me on a notebook. If you want more eye candy on a 15" you'll probably want an Alienware or something else with an 8800gtx.

    well it depends what resolution your desktop monitor is running at and which screen you are going to get in the 1530.

    Personally i dont really notice a difference between font size and such between a 20" at wsxga+ 17" at wxga+ or 15" at wxga, other than sheer screen real estate.

    If i were you i would go to a local electronics shop and look at the laptops and check if the screens give you eye strain or anything.

    This would also give you a chance to see how you feel about the wxga (1280x800) resolution, whether you think the font is to big or not enough screen real estate ect

    hmm is it a crt or an lcd, normally a 17" crt will have 16" of actual viewing space where as a laptop will have all 15" viewable so its not a huge difference unless your desktop is an lcd.

    to be quite honest, i think that the 1440x900 is better than the 1280x800. I play all of my games at 1280x800 anyway, but it seems like when I run games at the lower resolution on my screen, it makes them look a little hazy. I actually like this though because I think it helps to blur out the rough edges and imitate antialiasing without a performance loss.

    Plus I get to keep my desktop real estate ;p

    Ok my 2c

    I'm used to a 17" CRT monitor @ 1024x768. I've checked out 15.4" screens @ 1440 x 900 and they look awesome!

    That is going to be true on any LCD IIRC. It is because you are not running it in its native resolution. I think what happens is you have a group of pixels representing one pixel at native res. So you lose the crispness of your native res.

    @OP

    If you are using 1280x1024 now on a 17" screen and you move to a 15" laptop at 1280x800 you will hardly notice a difference in the size of your icons and text. Moving to a 1680x1050 15" screen will be a BIG difference.
