while i was gaming playing the company of heroes on my e1705, i accidently unplugged the power cord while i was reaching for something behind the laptop. i instanly noticed lower graphics performance while the power cord was disconnected.

does the geforce 7900 gs automatically underclock itself while the power cord is disconnected to save power?

then when i connect the power cord again, it goes back to awesome gaming performance. any thoughts on this?

p.s man i cant wait for company of heroes to come out.

chances are your guess is correct. dell probably put some kind of mechanism into the e1705 so that the video card underclocks when it runs on battery. it may or may not be a good feature for some. to me, however, it is nice to save battery when im on the go. also, i dont do any gaming when im on the go and doing work.

If they did put that feture in, it is great because the battery won't waste as fast

Yes, the 7900gs underclocks itself on battery because the battery cannot give enough wattage to satisfy it. If you try to overclock back up to where it is on AC power, you get wierd errors and massive screen distortion because the battery is not giving enough juice. The Powermizer technology can underclock your card even more, however even when idling at low clocks the 7900gs sucks a pretty good draw...

You can always turn off Powermizer so you'll retain same performance under battery but that's really pointless.
