anyone have an idea if the 8600/8700m will be able to be modded into an e1705? I'm considering the purchase of a 7950gtx, but if there was a chance I could get an 8 series card in there I would rather wait and pay more for that.

Well, we've got the supposed e1720 coming up with GeForce 8M or ATI HD cards. That means the design of Dell parts has again changed, and they are not going to update the e1705 to accomodate DX10 GPUs. So the 7950GTX is all you could probably get, and that isn't a worthwhile upgrade for the money compared to the 7900GS.
