glossy is 50 bucks more, but doesn't it have a greater chance of graininess? does it have any clear advantages being 50 bucks more? thanks.
-
I don't know anything about the graininess, but anti-glare and glossy wxga are the same price. You are comparing anti-glare wxga with glossy wxga+, totally different resolutions. So, the advantage of 50 bucks is higher resolution and some better contrast. There are some other minor details.
Personally, I hate glossy. However, glossy is the only thing offered for the resolution I wanted: wsxga+. Blargh! -
Glossy usually produces crispier images. The downside is it reflects light quite a bit, so is more suitable for indoor use only. If you are planning to use your notebook outdoors or in an environment with high intensity lights, then go with matte.

i got a mate screen (inspiron 9100) and a glossy (vaio FZ19VN) right next to eachother atm
and the light is tured on
if i'm in front of the mate screen, there's no problem whatsoever
in front of the glossy screen however, i need to position myself a bit ... otherwise the light reflects on this screen
that said, i like the colors of the glossy better, they're more vibrant -
My sisters laptop screen is anti-glare and the one I bought is glossy. From what I had read on the net I thought it would be a night mare to own a glossy display but it hasn't. Reflections are barely ever a problem and in the 9 months i've owned my laptop reflections have only made me reposition twise.
Further more pictures and movies looks so much better on a glossy screen. The colours look more alive, everything looks more clear and crisp. But if you will regularly be using your laptop outdoors then my advise would be to choose an anti-glare screen. -

It would be nice to get a picture of those screens side by side.
Personally I can't stand glossy screens, but it could help someone making their mind up on which display to choose.
For what is worth my idea is that if you use your laptop for work you should go matte, while if you like multimedia and gaming, a glossy screen is a better choice. -
Both screens have there pros and cans but I chose matte just so I wouldn't be bothered outside.

Glossy has higher contrast which makes movies and pictures look nicer but if you're a designer or photographer you don't want that because it'll throw you off. Dell offers the glossy screen in higher resolution than matte which is something to consider but I personaly find it to be just too reflective. I think that glossy screens is a trend and that it won't last.

If you plan to use the laptop in an environment that has fluorescent lighting then glossy screen is definitely a nono.
-
This is really a matter of opinion and no one can speak for you. I'd go to a Best Buy or an Office Depot and compare for yourself.
FWIW - I am switching from glossy to matte this time around. -
i'm attaching the 2 screens

I regret not going with the glossy display

My 1420 glossy display has tricky viewing angles but is absolutely gorgeous.

I think there is a reason that matte screens in laptops are nearly obsolete. I've debated between the two, but after comparing a matte screen Inspiron 1501 to several glossies at our local Sams Club, I think I like the vibrancy of glossy better. On the other hand, my daughter says that all the reflections and keeping the glossy screen clean on her Gateway really gets annoying after a while.

I just know in my local stores I see very few if any matte screens, but maybe it's different where others live. Personally I have a mat LCD screen for my desktop and there is no way I would want glossy. I'm still undecided on which one to go with for a laptop.

The majority opinion (glossy) is not always the best. The matte is the right choice for me. Sure, it might not be as vibrant, but it won't have glare and it'll be a hell of a lot easier to clean.
-
I know. My daughter has glossy on her Gateway. I think it looks good, but she says she would definitely prefer a non gloss screen. She said the glossy looks good at first, but then starts getting very annoying because of the reflections and shows fingerprints like crazy.

A simple lens cleaner that you can pick up for $2 at any eyeglass store is all you need for a print-free glossy screen.
-
You see the dirt more though, so you end up wiping it a couple times per day, especially if you have cats or dogs.
glossy or anti glare?
