which screen is best for normal use and gaming? i heard the non glossy is better but im not sure also which one would be more visible outside? does the glossy screen really make it that hard to see little fonts? and! one more does the glossy screen cut down on battery life?

no the glossy screen does not. I would not upgrade the monitor unless you want a higher viewing area.

First of all, which laptop are you thinking about getting?

Second, neither screen "works better." As has been mentioned several times before on these boards, it really is a matter of personal preference.

Battery life on both screens should be exactly the same; however, because the Truelife screen is more prone to reflections, under certain situations, you may have to turn the brightness up, where you wouldn't have to on a matte screen. This of course would reduce battery life, but theoretically, if you were using the same brightness levels on both screens, battery life would be the same.

The truelife screen does not always have more viewing area (higher resolution) & the higher resolution screens don't always come with Truelife (although most of the time they do). To answer that question, we need to know what laptop you're thinking about getting.

Before making your purchase, you should definitely go down to your local electronics store & took a look at both screens.

well, the glossy screen improves on how much you can see on the screen that can be good or bad because if you increase it so much that you can't see it that is bad. It is not much better in my opinion then the regular matte. The glossy screen does not cut down on battery life I think. I have a matte screen and my sister has a glossy. I like the matte better but she likes the glossy so it is all up to preference. If you like I can help you get a good deal because I have many dell coupons, just fill out a faq and pm me.

lol... well THAT's kind of obscure.

According to Dell, the Truelife/Glossy screen "offers up to a 10% higher contrast ratio," "[offering] a viewing experience that is more crisp and more vivid." The down side is that they are more prone to reflections and glare.

The matte screen on the other hand, uses an anti-glare coating which I would assume reduces the contrast ratio. It may not look as nice, but you would not have much of a problem with reflections & glare.

Like I said, you're probably better off taking a trip to the store and taking a look for yourself. It'll be 1000 times more helpful than these wordy, meaningless descriptions.

NOTE: It may difficult to see under harsh sunlight regardless of what type of screen you have.

First, like others have stated, it's a personal preference, so definitely go to your local tech store and checkout the difference. Second, if you're staring at the computer at long stretches, using small font sizes, and working in doors, I found the glare/glossy screen to be better but if you need to work outside, it's obvious that the matte/non-glossy screen is more suitable.

For gaming, I prefer to have the glossy screen but that's MY preference.

BEFORE anybody tries to start a war of words about why they think glossy is beter......... I just want to say the following is JUST MY OPINION. Yours may be different and that is OK too.

I went with the matte screen and love it. Picture looks great. If you have an LCD desktop monitor.....it looks the same as that.

Couldn't stand the reflections in the glossy screens when I saw them in the store. They were like a mirror. I could see EVERYTHING behind me. It's got to be alot worse outside in the sun. Having a glossy computer screen would drive me insane.

If the glare and reflection in a regular TV screen annoys you, then don't get the glossy screen.....the glare is even worse. I won't even buy a TV anymore if it has one of those protective covers that cause glare over the screen.

The problem with looking at the screens in a store is that most stores (BestBuy, Compusa, et al) are brightly lit with lots of overhead fluorescent lights. The glare and reflection is going to be exaggerated. I don't see that at home in a den or living room lit by a tungsten lamp or 2. I like the bright, crisp display. But outside in the sun it's worthless. I can use it to shave.

If you can find a friend that has a Truebright screen (or HP's, Gateway's, whoever's version) and look at it in a normal environment you'll get a better feel.

It looks like the I9400 is currently available w/ the following LCD options:

    Matte XGA+
    Truelife WUXGA

You may want to take a look at both resolutions on 17" displays to see if one might be too big or too small.
