Just put into my cart a nice m1330 from the outlet with a nice 64GB solid state drive. It's got 2.2Ghz, 3gb ram, GEForce 8400M, BT module, 4965 wireless N card. No LED display though. Pre-tax comes to $1410(after 15% coupon).
Do you think this a just a decent deal or pretty good?

64gig Solid State Hardrive.... Not sure if they're That much more useful than regular hard drives right now
-
what 15% coupon?
-
That's actually an awesome deal, who is the maker of the SSD?

Its the Samsung SSD. Read up on SSDs below; you will find the tests on that drive in the 'SSDs benchmarked' thread and all the benchmarks are in the 'New SSD' Thread.
As for the writer who questioned the difference between the HD and SSD. There is a universe of difference between the two.
That is covered throughout the threads as well.
Matter of fact, I found my very first article here at NBR which relates to the SSD although it is Sandisk which is much slower. Read the article to learn ablout the great positives and then multiply them by 2 for your SSD. -
Solid state is pretty much a huge flash drive for a hard drive, which is kind of funny

Imagine doing something on your computer and waiting for it to respond and then seeing that it already has. Imagine the feeling that the computer knows what your going to do next before you do. Imagine wondering why its so cool and if its broken because the fan never comes on. Imagine your computer sounding like a calculator..completely silent. Imagine turning your laptop on, turning away only to turn back and find its already ready to go.
Thats what lifes like with a SSD!!!! -
But right now its more like turning on your computer with nothing on it cause the hard drive is smaller than your ipod.
edit- a few albums of music -
We will have to agree to disagree. Its today for many.
Actually, Dell has had problems keeping them in stock because of the demand for them. As far as the size of the SD, one needs to understand whats needed and whats not.
I have everything I need on it and still have 11Gb free space...running VistaUlt 64bit with Office 2007 and all my personal and work files to include video, pictures and music....and my benchmarking programs.
I personally think we have come into an age that people now believe everything they know has to be right there on the hard drive. "Yes, I may not ever look at that file again but its right there if I need it" People are screaming for 250Gb plus hard drives but, when asked, can't give a logical explanation why they need them. -
flamenko, you can add an ExpressCard eSATA (external SATA) card, get an eSATA hard drive enclosure, and add 500GB storage for cheap. I recently picked up a 500GB 7200rpm 3Gb/sec SATA drive for $100. The ExpressCard has two eSATA ports so you can easily add 1TB with performance much better than USB or 1394 external drives. Or if you want something more portable there are 2.5" enclosures, add a 200GB 7200 rpm or 320GB 5400 rpm laptop drive.
Then you get the benefits of 0.2 millisecond access for the stuff that needs to run the fastest on SSD (and silence, no heat, low power) but still have tons of external storage available at the SAME speed as internal SATA ... -

Nice idea (and background work) Proficio...

But I guess a superfast bootup would be really amazing. I just noticed that you had a 32gig ssd. I thought it said 320gig ssd i was like HWUAA?! -
I presently have a 32Gb Mtron Pro, 32Gb Memoright, 64Gb Samsung and 32Gb Sandisk.
Within the next few weeks I should be receiving several 64-256Gb SSDs (and maybe higher) for testing from such companies as Ridata, STEC, and Mtron and hopefully Samsung.
They are all test samples, the biproduct of which I retain some for reliability opinions. -

I just ordered a 1530 with T7800 2.6Ghz and 64GB SSD. This machine is going to be screaming fast. I will add the ExpressCard eSATA controller and will have 3GB per second to a 500GB 3.5" 7200 rpm drive. Also, when not home I can plug in an ExpressCard CompactFlash adapter if the 64B SSD space gets too tight. I have also seen ExpressCard SSD but CompactFlash in ExpressCard adapter would be more affordable for just files like music, programs, data. Looking forward to benchmarking with the T7800, 8600M GT, and SSD. This notebook will put my desktop computer to shame. I suppose it is about to be obsoleted.

I have a 60 GB HDD and I must say, like flamenko, everything I need fits nicely. I have 10.3 GB free still. I'm running Vista Home Premium, I have NIS 2008, Office 2003, music, movies, files. I have yet to run out of space on my HDD.
I wouldn't have the slightest idea of what to do with more then 120 GB of space. -
Well it depends on what you need I guess, I am going to triple boot this thing and run VMWare workstation with full access to disk. This makes it so I will be able to boot natively into XP, Vista, or Linux, OR on each of those boot any of the other inside a VM. Then there is games, I can easily fill 120GB with games alone. They keep getting bigger, 10GB for one game is not uncommon now. So the separate ExpressCard eSATA will allow for expansion to up to two 500GB high speed drives (at home only). On the road, I could keep one or two games installed on SSD, whichever I'm into at the time.

proficio:
Great plans and you have the knowledge but you must consider one thing. When you use a HD for your external drive the bottleneck is created by the access time of the HD itself which, in most cases, is 15ms compared to .1ms of a SSD.
This is where most see the visual speed of the SSD for the most part. -
Yes that is why all three OS will be on SSD, along with tons of software tools, and I'm working on a way to auto-magically move installed games from the external SATA drive to the SSD, as in scripting. Install a game on SSD so everything is in the registry, then script moves it offline to eSATA. I will then be able to pick 2 or 3 games from a list and the script will put them on SSD, so I can play them, without having to keep uninstalling and reinstalling. My only concern is what is the life of SSD, I once paid over $500 for a ONE GB microdrive when they were new, and it eventually died, after a year, ouch. Since SSD is new and there is not much history, I wonder. They list stats of MTBF mean time between failure, but it is flash, and I believe that flash eventually wears out. I guess we will know soon, er I mean hopefully not too soon.

Read my lengthy discussion regarding wear levelling and the life of a SSD here:

well, I did end up buying this configuration from the outlet, but wasn't able to use my DPA with no interest till 2009 promo because their phone ordering system was down that afternoon. After numerous emails requesting a change of payment methods from my CC to the DPA and being told that I would have to return the unit and try to buy another identical unit using the DPA, I got a hold of a "resolution specialist" who could only offer me $100 coupon and a $25 credit to my CC. I took the offer and suppose I will keep the unit when I finally receive it. Hope I don't end up suffering buyers remorse.
thanks for all of the input guys -
You should be ecstatic. You got a price for a top rated system with a 64Gb SSD that most would jump at if they could.
What was the final price by the way? You must be around 1300 no? with an SSD!!!!
So, lets do this... subtract the normal price of that SSD from the total system cost and let us know what the system cost you lol. -
Will be busy reading your vista tweaks thread. First time with vista. Thx -
Heck...if you don't like it I will buy it off ya! 1375 for a loaded system with a SSD... Wow.. You came close to my final price...
Just so you know...all my tweaks have been done with the SSD. -

Now, just have to convince the wife that it was worth it : ) She keeps asking "why do we need a new laptop?" -
I would rather have the 4965 AGN than the 1505 Draft N. I cannot use Linux Ubuntu because the 1505 will not work.
and...pictures....That was the seller for my wife once upon a time. Women love the idea of just plugging the camera in and downloading the pictures. -
my wife does like taking pics of our 2mo old baby, as well as pics for ebaying her name brand clothing, so this should be good. Guess who does all the uploading though? : )
I agree re: 4965. As for the LED display, I guess it'll be one of those things where since I haven't seen it, I don't know what I'm missing. And I have a feeling that once I've experienced a SSD, I won't want to go back to regular HDs.
good deal for SSD?
