it seems that all the m1330s lately are CMO screens.. i just checked my service tag and it has a cmo screen.. the laptop is due to arrive on tuesday.. we'll see how it fairs.. if nothing is wrong with it.. i wouldn't go thru the trouble of having a them open up my comp...![]()
-
btw.. after reading the specs on both toshiba matsu****a and chi mei's websites
http://www.tmdisplay.com/tm_dsp/press/2007/07-03-20.html
http://www.cmo.com.tw/opencms/cmo/products/iaav/products_iaav_G133I1_L02.html?__locale=en
the chi mei is 400 nits Luminance versus toshiba's 300 nits
maybe that is why people have said in posts that the chi mei is brighter then the tmd -
Chi Mei screens aren't that bad...
-
Mine is also due for Tuesday delivery. How did you find your service tag?
-
how do you get your service tag before receiving the laptop?
-
Greetings, all.
If you haven't received your system yet, just find "My systems list" under technical support, and click "add my new systems".
I just found that myself, and once it's entered, you'll be able to see the parts list when you click on the service tag. Unfortunately for me, my m1530 that's scheduled to arrive here on Tuesday had this glaring at me:
1 RW985 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 15.4WSXGA+, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC...., TLF, SAMSUNG...
I'm going to keep an open mind, but seriously... for all the documentation on the quality or lack-there-of with these screens I'm amazed and appalled at the same time that Dell can continue to mount garbage LCD's in their flagship systems. -
-
-
-
on my order i have this:
13.3 Inch Wide Screen WXGA TL WLED Backlit LCD with Camera, XPS M1330
any chance this tells me if i got a CMO or Toshiba? -
I got my Chi Mei last week..i'm quite happy with it...it has a little bit of backlight bleed at the top, but it's symmetrical and not that noticeable. The graininess is really not that bad and is only noticeable on a white background when you look very close.
The colours are excellent, and it is VERY VERY bright...i put it next to my old 600m, and it was at least 3x brighter....very nice.... -
Thanks, -
Sorry for reasking the question, please disregard. Thanks
-
so could someone post a comparison photo where you can see both the CMO and the toshiba screens?
-
I don't care what kind I get, but if it is grainy or has a flicker Dell WILL be replacing it. I didn't pay $1400 to get screwed out of a decent screen.
-
to get your service tag.. just call dell.. and ask them for it.. give them your customer #.. if your system already shipped.. they should have the service tag in the system..
-
I got it, looks like another CMO rather than LG or Toshiba.
But if it is really grainy or I'm not satisfied goodbye again!!!
I re ordered cuz I got it onsale for 500 less, but still my 1210 screen
doesn't have the lines that the CMO did. darn. -

I followed the instructions given by the OP. My M1330 will arrive tomorrow. My system says this:
1 UN864 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 13.3 WXGA, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC...., TLF, LGP, V2
so what does this mean for me? What type of screen do I have? An LG?? -
LGP most likely stands for LG-Phillips
-
-
Yes, if that's what it is.
-
i thought they only used tmd or cmo screens for led backlit -
-
i got a chi mei as well my third m1330 arrives today but i just checked the service tag i am so angry at the moment as i know i will probably have to get a tech out to replace it. When they replace the whole system they will build exactly the same parts wise
.
-
Toshiba is not any better. -
received, yup its still crappy
-
Hmm... wonder if this whole $799 off thing was a way to get rid of crappy CMO inventory...
-
Great find. I now know that my 1530 (that should arrive later today) has the LG WXGA+.
Nice. -
you guys should check this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=213098 if you are having a hard time finding your type of screen.
-
Per my service tag number:
RP774 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 13.3 WXGA, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC...., TLF, TRANSFORMER METROPLEX DESKTOP...
I assume this is the toshiba screen? -
Was your system shipped already?
-
-
I feel much better knowing I got a decent screen based on all the trouble I've been hearing from other buyers.
Anyway, as an update, I just found out that mine has arrived from my sister who just called me. I have classes right now and my last one doesn't end until 4:45 then I get to go home and open my baby.
She better not have opened it. I gave her a list of instructions of what to do and where to put it until I got home and she is supposed to guard that box with her life! lol -
got the system.. the chi mei is actually very nice..
i do notice the horizontal lines if i look very closely at the screen on white background.. not grainy at all.. i have seen grainy screens before.. on other models of dell notebooks..
other then that.. its effing insanely bright.. 400nits > toshiba's 300nits..
i think i will keep it.. and i have no flicker on lower brightness either.. viewing angle excellent..
not as good as my desktop flat panel.. but very close.. -
I've ordered a 1525 with 1440x900 on 1/12 and it just shipped.
Thanks for giving us instructions for getting the service tag...
mine says:
1 RU679 MODULE..., LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 15.4WXGA+, TLF, LGP, SPEA...
1 KR515 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 15.4WXGA+, TLF, LGP, V2
I think this means LG screen -
-
-
-
Someone at Dell must be a Transformer nerd. -
I don't know about all of you but....
my Chi Mei screen (XPS 1330) looks pretty good
I don't have a CPU whine
I don't get any clicking
My base is not wobbly
The Build quality is great
I just received it last week. -
same here.. very pleased with the chi mei's brightness and no grainyness at all..
no cpu whine.. no wobble.. flat keyboard.. good build quality..
i was expecting the worst after reading the board... but im pleasantly surprised.. especially at the chi mei's brightness and color..
what i really dont understand is why the toshiba display is called the TRANSFORMER METROPLEX DESKTOP.. apparently that's not a company.. and nothing on toshiba matsu****a display's website says anything about TRANSFORMER METROPLEX DESKTOP.. lol
anyways.. chi mei 400nits brightness versus toshiba 300nits.. not bad imho if you don't have any other problems with the chi mei.. i say keep it and stop having them open up your baby again and again to get a toshiba just cuz everyone says its better.. -
I just know that TRANSFORMER METROPLEX DESKTOP sounds bad ass
-
I wonder:
with all the talk of brightness between screen brands, do people realize that, aside from your normal screen brightness control, you can also go into the Nvidia control panel and crank the brightness up there even more? You can make the screen so bright, everything just washes out. My 1330 came with brightness in the Nvidia control panel set to 50%; if you max both settings out (Quickset and Nvidia), your display is unusable.
My point is, that I don't think Toshiba's lower nit value handicaps it in any way if you know how many adjustments are possible. -
-
what i'm talking about is how much luminence the display can actually project and that is measured in nits...
it's completely different then software adjustments of "brightness".. -
Hmm. Well, they call it "Brightness." Mine doesn't get more white, it gets brighter, which results in so much glare, everything is washed out; not more white...washed out. In any case, I was also thinking that not everyone is going to have the Nvidia control panel :-o
-
But is brightness that important compared to contrast ratio?
You guys say that chi mei is very bright, that might lead to loss in colours isn't it? -
true.. the tmd display is 250:1 while the CMO is 500:1.. double the contrast ratio
http://tmd-product.tmdisplay.com/index_e.cfm
if you goto the notebook section.. the first one is the 13.3 inch.. the 2nd 13.3 inch is a touch screen for tablets..
click the check box and click details to see..
versus the cmo display below

I recently ordered a new XPS M1330 (already have one in my household) and got the CMO LCD.
My existing M1330 has the Toshiba LCD which although slightly less bright, is much easier on the eyes and appears to offer better overall image quality.
The CMO has rather bad backlight bleeding, a heavy grain to the image and the tiny horizontal black lines mentioned elsewhere.
If I had not already been spoiled by the Toshiba LCD, I would have considered this screen to be highly decent, but I felt cheated out of a superior display when I sat the two next to one another.
I contacted Dell via chat and they're going to send me a brand new machine, so we'll have to see which type of LCD the replacement will contain. Wish me luck!
Also, interestingly enough, my older M1330 has a slower CPU, less memory and integrated graphics while the newer one has the GeForce 8400GS option. I can honestly say that Vista Aero performance on the integrated Intel video is smoother than on the GeForce. When it comes to gaming, the Intel is pathetic, while the GeForce is slightly less so, but I was surprised to notice the Intel being superior in Windows. Either Nvidia's drivers are horrible, or the 8400GS just can't handle Aero properly.
got a chi mei..
