Useless post? What exactly is this post offering?
Listen, hostilities and apologies aside, the point I am making is that what you are seeing is the quality of the screens Dell is shipping out. If you read too much into what other people complain about, that will skew your opinions. Don't be one of those owners that has to send back a screen 4 or 5 times once you realize the 2nd replacement you install is pretty similiar to your original.
Load up a game and enjoy. Don't sweat the small stuff. Unless it looks like your looking at a whiteboard, is a little more brightness going to ruin your laptop experience?

like i said in the first post i expected some leakage and for it to be similar to my 9300s screen, and thats it. -
I just got my M170 yesterday. Already been on with Dell Tech Support. My Screen is worse than the pics you have posted, although I ma sure they don't show the extent of the leakage.
As you have said, Some leakage is expected, but this is a bit extreme, ESPECIALLY at a 2400 Price tag. If they think for a second I am going to keep this with the screen looking like it does.. They are nuts. We'll see whatthe tech brings out to replace mine with..
Is there any way to find out who the manufacturer was?
As for the support. I can't complain.. Too Much. I called three times.. 2 of the times, it just disconnected me. the third, no wait. No hassle. I did get a follow up call at dman near midnight from Dell though. They wanted to make sure i was happy with the support. Umm...Do you people know how to look at time zones and what time it MIGHT BE where you are calling? Yea.. Thanks.. You just woke up the house including the 5 month old.
So far though, laptop looks OK. -
to find the manufacturer check this thread out. the inspiron 9300, gen 2 and m170 have the same screens so the methods should work for all of them.

well the business xps support sucks, from what i was told we do not get the same special xps support as the regular home user (altough i got it from aafes as a home user). ive probly been on hold for at least 10 hours since sending in my m170 last monday, and i still dont know when im getting it back. -
lol, sorry to hear about everyone's experiences with this laptop. I recieved mine with no problems and my screen is perfect, there's just some minor leakage when the screen is pitch black, but I never notice if the whole screen isnt completely black. I'm very satisfied with my purchase and so far never had any problelms with it what so ever.
-
Im sure the Dell technician will bring a beautiful screen, such as mine, a Samsung...pictures will never do it justice.
I know how aggravating it is dealing with their cust support, but it will all be worth it. -
I just bought mine today and I am now also worried. Perhaps I should consider this. The guy I bought it from paid $5,684.00 (I have the invoice from Dell). His wife got mad about the purchase and forced him to sell it. The system is still in the original unopened boxes.
I paid $3,350.00. Why didn't he just return it to Dell and pay the 15% and get $4,831.40 back.
Perhaps I should return it and make a nice little profit of $1,481.40.
Do you think I can return it when I'm not the original buyer.
The seller bought the system from Dell on October 28th.

@roligan- the guy paid $5,684 for what? Is that canadian$?
Why didnt you buy a brand new setup for less...
Im confused? xps m170? -
yeah that really dont make any sense
-
I'v read the whole thread and now I'm a bit confused. Was quite sure that it was a XPSm170 I should have, but after this thread I'm not sure anymore. Is the screen that bad? I need a computer that got the power of an desktop machine, but portable as a laptop. I will work in Photoshop, 3Dstudio but also want to play games when I got time. Maybe the XPSM170 is just a fairytale to good to be true?
-
@Brauer-Do some more research...You still want to get an m170, trust me, especially with the 30% off coupon, like dprimm has been talking about...
I cant talk for anyone else, but my screen is beautifully flawless.
Its no fairytale, but you might not able to appreciate such a fine machine... -
Allt he reviews.. From Tom's Hardware to PC gaming.. This IS the best gaming laptop.
Do I think there is an issue with some of the screens? I think so. If you are on a black screen, there is a LOT of leakage and it looks terrible. Even the XPS wallpaper on the desktop, I can see it. In game? No I don't notice it. Web pages? Nope, not noticed. It is only on black screens... Am I being picky? Yes. I paid for a top dollar for top laptop. Expecting a BLACK screen to be BLACK is not unreasonable. Some leakage is expected, but I have seen CHEAP dells look better within this regard.
Keep in mind.. One of the things that IS rated on LCDs and such are Blacks being black nad not gray, etc. -
@Chesney-that "light leakage" you see on the XPS wp is actually a "lighting effect"...I dont have any leakage when playing DARK games.
-
Lighting effect? Now that is a good one! You work for Dell? J/K
I have had more than few Laptops, more than few LCDs and have never seen the light leakage like this LCD. It is NOT a normal effect and shouldn;t be accepted.
From what I can figure.. It is either from a poorly made screen that the actual LCD screen has a gap where the light the light that illuminates the LCD is generally located.
OR, the light is way to bright.
Either way.. It's not a lighting effect. -
Hey Doobie,
What is the status of your Lappy? They find it yet? Or send you a new one? -
@chesney-look a pictures of others' m170 desktop with the xps wp- you will see the "light leakage" exactly where your is...weird huh? get it?
-
HAHA! You think I am talking about the light shingin from the upper right corner? That's funny!
I am talking about along the bottom of the LCD when the Screensaver, or even the XPS wall paper. There is light LEAKING up from the bottom. It shows on ANY dark screen.
Read the whole thread.. You'd know we aren't talking about the XPS Wallpaper only. -
Chesney, most of the time I wont read an entire thread over 3 pages if isnt that engaging. I was just trying to help. I was clearly addressing the XPS wp, thus eliminating any chance of confusion...good day.
-
well...basically my xps m170 was lost at the dell repair depot on the 18th of october. after getting jerked around for two weeks calling business xps support i was finally switched over to the resolution expert center and assigned a case worker (i guess you can call it that). he assured me that this issue was going to be resoved and he would see to it...
he told me to give him a day or two to find my system...a couple days later he calls and tells me they have to send a brand new unit because they cant find my m170. i think he said the new one will ship next week... -
Called in my order today. Since I'm living in Sweden I wasn't able to get the 30% off even if I tried. He said it was something that the US market uses. I did get a free upgrade to 3years service instead.
Spec:
2,13GHz, 2GB RAM, 80GB HDD, geforce 6800Ultra. Total $2813,90 -
I had the same problem with my 9300, very heavy light leakage out of the box but after four weeks or so, this light leakage will dissipate to where it isnt nearly as bad. Chances are you got a samsung screen and that is a very good screen, after some weeks of use you will notice improvement in the leakage and will love your display, the samsungs have much better viewing angles and in the nvidia display settings you can adjust the properties to your likings for punchier colors and soo forth. -

check out this link for a great color profile for samsung lcd panels if thats what you got on your m170 -
@ I23, You add Negative Repuation points on me because you didn't READ the thread and added your .02 ? I don;t get it? Was that necessary?
-
i finally got my replacement m170.
it has minimal leakage on the bottom and it looks really good....except for one red, dead pixel. its in a good spot and i dont notice it. -
-
its a samsung, if it wasnt for the dead pixel it would be perfect. -
Did you try gently rubbing it and massaging it. If it doesnt work try a Dead Pixel Video Help to maybe get it unstick. That should work for you.
got my xps m170 in the mail...
