Maybe this is not one for the Dell forums, but since there are so many grainy screen topics here. I wonder, does anyone know if the grainy screen issue is due to the screen being glossy? Some things I read said it was due to coating.

Also do glossy screens have a lower viewable angle than matte screens? The samsung screen I got was grainy, but worse, it's viewing angles were such that if I didn't have my head positioned at a specific angle looking at the center of the screen the edges of the screen turned dark.

Are matte screens ever grainy? I wonder if I can avoid these issues by going with a matte screen.

I have a dell inspiron 6000 with 1680x1050 resolution that is matte and it has some grain, but so little it not noticeable unless you look really close. What's more it has great viewing angles. I have to be looking almost from the side to get the screen to get dark. That screen is a Samsung too.

I found the same thing, the graininess wasn't the worst thing about my M1530, it was the rubish viewing angles. I don't know if this is a glossy screen thing or not.

    One word: NO.

There are grainy matte screens, there are matte screens with poor viewing angles... etc. You can't avoid those issues simply by going matte, it's a matter of luck...

Dell's Samsung/Epson glossy screen does have a anti-glare coating and it's noticeable but I've read it's a hit or miss. I have the m1530 and the screen is acceptable. HP has the same screen and is having the same problem. HP's glossy screens on lower end models are very reflective and difficult to use with lots of lights in the background but it's gorgeous.
