Ok well i had a big hassle with dell last week and they have asked me what i would like as a gesture of goodwill / compensation.

I was wondering if I could upgrade the 8600M GT i have on my 1520 to
    a 8800MGT,

Can the motherboard support it?, and would it fit?..
If not what should i ask for from Dell?, is a RAM upgrade worth it? (I have 2gb)

    Thanks

No, you would need a new motherboard and a d900c laptop case. 1520 is too small for the 8800 to fit

What games are you trying to run? What drivers are you using? Have you tried overclocking?

Try searching for the 8800M GTX laptops if you really want to run all [except Crysis, I guess] games at max settings and res. They're bulky and [as of now, m15x not yet available] can only be found on 17" DTRs.

The only way you can upgrade your gpu is if Dell decides to make the 1520 available with other cards than the 8600GT. If they do, then you'll be able to upgrade. But as of right now, the best card available for the 1520 is the 8600, so that's as good as you will get. There is nothing more powerful available for the Inspiron 1520

I dont really want to overclock as it voids the warranty (as told by Dell)
    Im using the 169.28 drivers
Ive been playing UT3, which runs on max settings beautifully.
Crysis gave me so many problems, first time i got it to run on medium-low smoothly but second launch and all the objects in the distance appeared black and random orange rectangles started appearing all over the map. So ive uninstalled it

Company of heroes struggles even on medium settings
Should i try Omega Drivers?, i had success with these on my old laptop which had a Radeon 9700..

As adinu said, unless DELL release a 8700M or a 8800M for a 15”, you are out of luck. Frankly, I don’t think they ever will. The only imaginable upgrade for a 1520 right now is an 8600M GT DDR3 (M1530’s card), but I have no idea whether that is possible or not (if M1530's GPU is soldered on to the motherboard instead of using a PCIEX card, then you can't). Even if it is possible, that upgrade wouldn’t justify the cost.

Next time, do a little bit of research before you buy a notebook.

Whynot ask them for something else? Accessories?
