The Dell D820 configuration is superior, in my opinion.

hmmm i might look into this d820.. im pretty new to the notebook scene and was a heartbeat away from getting the 6400, but from the looks of what you just posted you can squeeze out better value for the money with the d820. my budget is also about the same as yours as well. anything good or bad to we need to know about this laptop? i'm also curious where you are finding this $650 CDN off until april 21... as far as I was aware the only deal like that was $650 off until april 27 (found here: http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/affiliates_notebooks?c=ca&cs=CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs) and I don't see that notebook listed. thx for your time.

I fought long and hard for weeks looking over everything out there, even cancelled 2 previous orders after a last minute mind change. There were a couple other brand laptops I liked the look of better, but they didn't come with the options I was after. The D820 scored perfectly on every single aspect of what I was after and looking for with it's options.

As far as the WiFi cards go, from specs and pictures I've seen the Dell card and the Intel card your talking about are the exact same card, just with a different brand name associated to them. Myself, I opted to not go with the dual band card because I don't know of a single place still using the old short range 802.11a that has even shorter range if your trying to pass it through walls or a smoke filled room. Just about everyone is using 802.11g exclusively except for maybe some old hotspots you find once in a great while who are using 802.11b still. If you have a 802.11g card though it will work with the older 802.11b systems still.

802.11a and 802.11b both came out at the same time, but the a's never really caught on despite being faster than the b's (a and g are the same speed though), it's because of the very limited range the a's had and trouble getting the signal to pass through anything but purified air.

I did go with the Blue Tooth option as well. Mainly because I have a Pocket PC cell phone that runs Windows Mobile 5.0 and Verizon EVDO Wireless Broadband Service built into the phone. I'm hoping sometime soon this year somebody will get the ability for this to be used as a wireless modem for my laptop via Blue Tooth to actually work.

I didn't go with the EVDO built into the laptop though because 2 years from now I hope to still be using the laptop and something newer and better than EVDO will likely be out by then (not that there's anything wrong with EVDO, I love it, but it'll be easier to update my phone than my laptop in 2 years when the technology changes as it always does).

Hmmm... I think your probably right that it is only applicable to the inspiron line, at least that is the impression I was always under. I believe the way they phrase it, "Save an additional $650 on the following systems" would suggest this. If this is indeed the case, than the d820 works out to be significantly more expensive then the 6400. Dang!

Overlooked that one detail about the memory you selected, you went with the 1 Gig of memory split between 2 seperate DIMM's (so you'll actually have 2 seperate 512Mb DIMM's taking up both your available memory slots).

It's only a $10 difference to instead go with the 1Gig Single DIMM, an option well worth the $10 difference in price for seemingly the same thing.

The benifit though in having just a single 1Gig DIMM is with the thoughts of future upgrades. You'll still have a free slot you could use down the road to add a second 1Gig DIMM giving you a total of 2Gig of RAM split between the 2 cards.

With that 512Mb Video Card, your going to want to add another Gig of RAM to this system down the road (no need to add it now though, just leave yourself the ability to do it later by freeing up your second available DIMM slot now.)

There's an automatic $400 off from Dell right now on the Latitude models (includes the Latitude D820) that you don't need a coupon for, once you completely total up your order, or add it to your wish list they automaticly toss in the $400 off deal. You won't see the $400 off though while your building the system, it shows up later. It also expires this Thursday the 20th.

You'll find once you total the 2 up, the cost is about the same in the end, but your getting much better features with the D820.

D820 is not TrueLife, so it is not as bright as other Dell models...

yea I'm not seeing the extra $400 off at the end, only the 15% :( I also was considering what bran said; to me the TrueLife bright, glossy screens are alot nicer than the traditional matte, but its a feature I guess I'm willing to discard for increased performance.
