Line up the IR ports on the devices you want to transfer files to/from and away you go. No "hack" is needed.

No. Dell only uses IR that can work with their remotes, they cannot send/receive data. Look in the manual, service repair guides.

if u have a cell phone or any other device with ir, just click send file or whatever and bring that device close to the ir on ur laptop, and u should have a message pop out on ur laptop telling u to accept or reject a file, something along those lines. it's a long process if u have files more than 1mb

When I get my i1520 I will see what i can discern... It is supposed to arrive Tuesday...

The Manual says two seperate things... On one page it is saying the IR port can communicate with other IR devices and on other pages it is saying it can't...

If it can it will be interesting as an IR port (full fledge) hasn't been on PCs in probably 5-10 years :|

The Vostro 1400/1500 and Inspiron 1420/1520 only come with comsumer IR receiver, which is not an IR port for data communication but just for the remote control. Earlier Inspiron does have IR port at least as an option. Same case for HP.

nope, just tried it with my Dash and 1420, Dash just showed "searching" for several minutes even while sitting right in front of the IR receiver of the laptop.

i don't think there ever will be a hack b/c it is only a reciever, i think that it doesn't have a infared LED to send, because it is for a remote.

If you do need an IR port, get a USB dongle for a few bucks. I got one a couple years ago and used it a few times before I have everything (my phone and my PDA) switched to BT.
