Here is my desktop, and my laptop.

Could someone with a 7200rpm laptop drive post up a screen cap of their result?

Here are my results, with a HGST (Hitachi) TravelStar 7K100, 100GB 7200rpm SATA drive, on my XPS M1210

Seems like I get around 25MB/s (inner) to about 50MB/s (outer) sequential transfer rate, with an average of over 40MB/s, and about 15.5ms random access time.

Despite the fact that it spins at 7200rpm, it only ever gets as hot as 45°C when I push it (downloading via BitTorrent while gaming at the same time, so lots of disk access), and usually hovers around 38°C-41°C doing normal work, and as low as 35°C when idle. I'd say it runs no hotter than the previous 5400rpm in my M1210 (which was a 60GB Toshiba).

I can't wait until HGST launch their "7K200" drive by middle of next year. 100GB/platter (200GB capacity), 7200rpm, flash memory onboard (to support Vista's ReadyDrive), and full disc encryption. Should make for a fine upgrade over what I have now. :)

Why is my 5400rpm drive so "spiky?"

Performance wise they all seem somewhat linear.

    7200 desktop > 7200 laptop > 5400 laptop

I don't feel that my 5400rpm is slow, I guess you kinda get used to what you got. If they get these 200GB 7200rpm drives out in the next year or so, it's nice to know I have a worthwhile upgrade waiting for me.
